Comparison between Hyperspectral Imaging and Chemical Analysis of Polyphenol Oxidase Activity on Fresh-Cut Apple Slices
(2020-06-29)
The assessment of the quality of fresh-cut apple slices is important for processing, storage, market value, and consumption. Determination of polyphenol oxidase activity (PPO) in apples is critical for controlling the quality of the final product (i.e., dried apples and juices). Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a nondestructive, noncontact, and rapid food quality assessment technique. It has the potential to detect physical and chemical quality attributes of foods such as PPO of apple. The aim of this study was to ...

Mineralization of Phosphorylated Fish Skin Collagen/Mangosteen Scaffolds as Potential Materials for Bone Tissue Regeneration
(2021-05-13)
In this study, a potential hard tissue substitute was mimicked using collagen/mangosteen porous scaffolds. Collagen was extracted from Tilapia fish skin and mangosteen from the waste peel of the respective fruit. Sodium trimetaphosphate was used for the phosphorylation of these scaffolds to improve the nucleation sites for the mineralization process. Phosphate groups were incorporated in the collagen structure as confirmed by their attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) bands. The phosphorylation ...

Explaining Chinese consumers’ green food purchase intentions during the COVID-19 pandemic: an extended theory of planned behaviour
(2021-05-26)
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has strongly influenced consumers’ habits and behaviours, creating a more sustainable and healthier era of consumption. Hence, there is a potential for further expanding the green food sector in China. The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) is one widely used framework to explain consumers’ food choices. Considering consumers’ internal norms, their perceptions of green food attributes, and the shifting consumer behaviour, our study has extended the TPB framework (E-TPB) by adding ...

Prediction of biomass and N fixation of legume-grass mixtures using sensor fusion
(2021-01-21)
European farmers and especially organic farmers rely on legume–grass mixtures in their crop rotation as an organic nitrogen (N) source, as legumes can fix atmospheric N, which is the most important element for plant growth. Furthermore, legume–grass serves as valuable fodder for livestock and biogas plants. Therefore, information about aboveground biomass and N fixation (NFix) is crucial for efficient farm management decisions on the field level. Remote sensing, as a non-destructive and fast technique, provides ...

Effect of Fibre Material and Fibre Roughness on the Pullout Behaviour of Metallic Micro Fibres Embedded in UHPC
(2020-07-14)
The use of micro fibres in Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) as reinforcement increases tensile strength and especially improves the post-cracking behaviour. Without using fibres, the dense structure of the concrete matrix results in a brittle failure upon loading. To counteract this behaviour by fibre reinforcement, an optimal bond between fibre and cementitious matrix is essential. For the composite properties not only the initial surfaces of the materials are important, but also the bonding characteristics ...

Farmers’ and Herders’ Perceptions on Rangeland Management in Two Agroecological Zones of Benin
(2021-04-16)
The sustainable use of rangelands in pastoral areas requires the inclusion of all stakeholders to develop sound management strategies. However, the role of these actors in the sustainable management of natural resources is still poorly understood. The present study aims to (i) assess the perception of farmers and herders of the risks and opportunities of transhumance on rangeland resource use and management, and to (ii) generate useful knowledge for the design and implementation of policies that favor the coexistence ...

Automatically Detected Pecking Activity in Group-Housed Turkeys
(2020-11-04)
Simple Summary
Cannibalism is one of the biggest welfare issues of today’s turkey husbandry. We hypothesized that changes in pecking activity might indicate imminent cannibalism. Therefore, in this pilot study a newly developed automatic pecking activity detection was validated, and continuously applied to gain information about pecking activity of group-housed turkeys during the rearing phase and before a cannibalistic outbreak. The pecking object was used by turkeys the whole recording time. Activity on the object ...

Felder und Akteur*innen kultureller Bildung in ländlichen Räumen
(2021-04-01)

Placemaking in Action: Factors That Support or Obstruct the Development of Urban Community Gardens
(2020-01-16)
The paper examines factors that support or obstruct the development of urban community garden projects. It combines a systematic scholarly literature review with empirical research from case studies located in New Zealand and Germany. The findings are discussed against the backdrop of placemaking processes: urban community gardens are valuable platforms to observe space-to-place transformations. Following a social-constructionist approach, literature-informed enablers and barriers for the development of urban community ...
