Participative Processes as a Chance for Developing Ideas to Bridge the Intention-Behavior Gap Concerning Sustainable Diets
(2018-11-27)
Sustainable diets are drivers and results of sustainable food systems. Therefore, they are crucial for improving our global diet-related problems. When trying to adopt sustainable diets, people often struggle with the gap between their good intentions and their actual behavior. Here we see a need for support. To understand people’s needs and what could help them, it stands to reason that they can be directly involved in the development processes for appropriate ideas. On that account, we conducted six workshops in ...

Comparing Electrical Energy Storage Technologies Regarding Their Material and Carbon Footprint
(2018-12-03)
The need for electrical energy storage technologies (EEST) in a future energy system, based on volatile renewable energy sources is widely accepted. The still open question is which technology should be used, in particular in such applications where the implementation of different storage technologies would be possible. In this study, eight different EEST were analysed. The comparative life cycle assessment focused on the storage of electrical excess energy from a renewable energy power plant. The considered EEST ...

Income Vulnerability of West African Farming Households to Losses in Pollination Services: A Case Study from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
(2018-11-17)
Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) in West African countries is developing rapidly in response to population growth and changing consumer preferences. Furthermore, UPA offers opportunities to secure income and social integration for the urban poor. However, little is known about household (HH) income security effects of the ongoing shift in UPA land use from crops that do not rely on insect pollinators for fruit development (e.g., sorghum and millet) to pollinator-dependent crops. In our study we developed a ...

Direct evidence for radiative charge transfer after inner-shell excitation and ionization of large clusters
(2018-01-16)
We directly observe radiative charge transfer (RCT) in Ne clusters by dispersed vacuum-ultraviolet photon detection. The doubly ionized Ne^2+ – Ne_n-1 initial states of RCT are populated after resonant 1s–3p photoexcitation or 1s photoionization of Ne_n clusters with {n} \approx 2800. These states relax further producing Ne^+ – Ne^+ – Ne_n-2 final states, and the RCT photon is emitted. Ab initio calculations assign the observed RCT signal to the Ne^2+(2p^-2 [^1D]) - Ne_n-1 initial state, while transitions from other ...

Circular Dichroism in Fluorescence Emission Following the C 1s→π* Excitation and Resonant Auger Decay of Carbon Monoxide
(2018-06-26)
Dichroism in angle-resolved spectra of circularly polarized fluorescence from freely-rotating CO molecules was studied experimentally and theoretically. For this purpose, carbon monoxide in the gas phase was exposed to circularly polarized soft X-ray synchrotron radiation. The photon energy was tuned across the C 1s→π* resonant excitation, which decayed via the participator Auger transition into the CO+ A 2Π state. The dichroic parameter β1 of the subsequent CO+ (A 2Π → X 2Σ+) visible fluorescence was measured by ...

Dissimilar Friction Stir Butt Welding of Aluminium and Copper with Cross-Section Adjustment for Current-Carrying components
(2018-08-24)
Manufacturing dissimilar joints of aluminum and copper is a challenging task. However, friction stir welding (FSW) was found to be a suitable technique to produce aluminum–copper joints. Due to different electrical conductivities between aluminum and copper, an adjustment of the cross-section is required to realize electrical conductors free of resistive losses. Taking this into account, this paper presents initial results on the mechanical and electrical properties of friction stir butt welded aluminum and copper ...

Collaboration of tRNA modifications and elongation factor eEF1A in decoding and nonsense suppression
(2018-08-24)
Transfer RNA (tRNA) from all domains of life contains multiple modified nucleosides, the functions of which remain incompletely understood. Genetic interactions between tRNA modification genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae suggest that different tRNA modifications collaborate to maintain translational efficiency. Here we characterize such collaborative functions in the ochre suppressor tRNA SUP4. We quantified ochre read-through efficiency in mutants lacking either of the 7 known modifications in the extended anticodon ...

A Paradigm Shift in Water Quality Governance in a Transitional Context: A Critical Study about the Empowerment of Local Governance in Georgia
(2018-01-01)
The management of water quality is an important part of natural resource governance. Assurance of water quality therefore requires formulation of the regulatory framework and institutional process. Water quality-related problems and their management are mainly recognized as local responsibilities in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The politics of environmental policy-making should consider the political economic dynamics and socio-ecological patterns. Decentralization by providing more power to the local ...

Nutrition Transition and Traditional Food Cultural Changes in Sri Lanka during Colonization and Post-Colonization
(2018-07-13)
Sri Lanka was a colony of the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The simplification of Sri Lankan food culture can be seen most clearly today, including how the diet has been changed in the last 400 years since the colonial occupation began. Therefore, greater efforts must be made to uncover the colonial forces that have undermined food security and health in Sri Lanka. Also traditional eating habits, which are associated with countless health benefits, have been gradually replaced by the globalized food system of ...

Sustainability Tensions in Supply Chains: A Case Study of Paradoxes and Their Management
(2018-02-06)
The comprehensive coverage of sustainability issues in a supply chain incurs goal conflicts—i.e., sustainability tensions—and is often limited by market characteristics, such as the availability of sustainable materials and services. While the mainstream business is prioritizing economic goals, a number of entrepreneurs are trying to move forward to more sustainable business practices for their own company and their supply chain. Fairphone represents such a case in the electronics industry, which is openly communicating ...
