The financialization of remittances and the individualization of development: A new power geometry of global development
(2021-08-23)
The article argues that the increasing financialization of remittances produces an enormous shift in the political economy of development and contributes to a new power geometry of development. Exploring this power geometry, the article focuses on three main issues: First, migrants intend to support their friends and families on an individual level as remittance senders, and together with the corresponding recipients they form a translocal moral economy. On a macro level, the value of these transactions is high when ...

Adsorption of PCE in alkali-activated materials analysed by fluorescence microscopy
(2021-10-18)
The realisation of high-performance concrete mixtures requires the use of superplasticizers to achieve a low water/binder ratio and thus high strengths. Polycarboxylate ethers (PCE) are mostly used as superplasticizers. The effectiveness of these superplasticizers depends on their chemical structure, the binders’ alkaline environment and the ions present in the pore solution of the binder. In high alkaline systems like some alkali-activated materials no effective superplasticizer have been found yet. To unravel the ...

On Optimal Test Signal Design and Parameter Identification Schemes for Dynamic Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Models Using the Fisher Information Matrix
(2021-11-21)
This paper is concerned with the analysis of optimization procedures for optimal experiment design for locally affine Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models based on the Fisher Information Matrix (FIM). The FIM is used to estimate the covariance matrix of a parameter estimate. It depends on the model parameters as well as the regression variables. Due to the dependency on the model parameters good initial models are required. Since the FIM is a matrix, a scalar measure of the FIM is optimized. Different measures and ...

Stream-based active learning for sliding windows under the influence of verification latency
(2021-11-18)
Stream-based active learning (AL) strategies minimize the labeling effort by querying labels that improve the classifier’s performance the most. So far, these strategies neglect the fact that an oracle or expert requires time to provide a queried label. We show that existing AL methods deteriorate or even fail under the influence of such verification latency. The problem with these methods is that they estimate a label’s utility on the currently available labeled data. However, when this label would arrive, some of ...

ESG Disclosure and Idiosyncratic Risk in Initial Public Offerings
(2021-06-01)
Although legitimacy theory provides strong arguments that environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure and performance can help mitigate firm-specific (idiosyncratic) risks, this relationship has been repeatedly challenged by conceptual arguments, such as ‘transparency fallacy’ or ‘impression management’, and mixed empirical evidence. Therefore, we investigate this relationship in the revelatory case of initial public offerings (IPOs), which represent the first sale of common stock to the wider public. IPOs ...

Ausbrüche von Histomonose bei langsamer wachsenden Putenlinien
(2021-09-02)
Histomonosis or Blackhead Disease is a poultry disease caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Histomonas meleagridis. Outbreaks are most frequent in turkey flocks, with often high mortality rates of up to 100%. During a study with three slower growing turkey strains on an organic farm in the years 2015 to 2018, in all three fattening batches outbreaks of histomonosis occured. The disease was diagnosed histologically by PAS-staining, in some cases PCR detection was performed. Heterakis gallinarum could not ...

Feed digestibility, digesta passage and faecal microbial biomass in desert-adapted goats exposed to mild water restriction
(2021-07-18)
In arid and semi-arid environments, extensively managed ruminants regularly experience drinking water shortage, especially in the dry season. The present study therefore investigated the effects of mild drinking water restriction on feed intake, feed digestibility, solid digesta passage and composition of faeces including faecal microbial biomass. A feeding trial was conducted in Oman, during the dry summer months.
Nine adult male Batinah goats were subjected to three watering regimes in a 3 × 3 Latin Square design. ...

Multiscale modeling of ferroelectrics with stochastic grain size distribution
(2021-12-20)
Macroscopic properties of ferroelectrics are controlled by processes on the microscale, in particular the switching of crystal unit cells and the movement of domain walls, respectively. Besides these microscopic levels, the grains of a polycrystalline material constitute the mesoscopic scale. Interactions of grains with statistically distributed orientations, as a consequence of mechanical and electrostatic mismatch, give rise to for example, residual stress which in turn affects domain switching. A multiscale modeling ...

Phenomena-centered Text Analysis (PTA): a new approach to foster the qualitative paradigm in text analysis
(2021-12-06)
Content or text analysis is one of the most common evaluation methods employed in qualitative research. Despite its wide application, however, a clear structure of how such evaluation should be conducted is often lacking due to the complexity of qualitative data. As a consequence, highly differentiated category systems with small-step subdivisions of categories and sub-categories are often used, leading to a loss of context both among categories and for the content as a whole.
The aim of this paper is to describe ...

Taking stock of the field of populism research: Are ideational approaches ‘moralistic’ and postfoundational discursive approaches ‘normative’?
(2021-04-23)
This article sets out to examine two claims that have increasingly come to define the dividing lines between the ideational and the post-foundational discursive approaches to populism: namely, that the former is moralistic and the latter is normative in orientation. The article considers the conceptual merits of both critiques while using them to further examine some of the implicit assumptions and pitfalls within Cas Mudde’s and Ernesto Laclau’s paradigmatic conceptualizations of populism. It is argued that ideational ...
