Adhesion of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) polypropylene (PP) composites after storage tests
(2022-07-15)
The objective of this study is the production of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) polypropylene (PP) composites. To create adhesion between LSR and thermoplastics, self-adhesive LSR types are available on the market. However, these materials are not effective for commodity thermoplastics, such as PP and no adhesion can be achieved between these two components. Therefore, the PP surface was activated by means of silicatization (flame treatment). Subsequently, the LSR was applied on the activated PP by an overmolding ...

Demonstration of Hybrid Effect in Single Fiber Pull-Out Tests for Glass/Cellulose-Reinforced Polypropylene with Different Fiber–Matrix Adhesions
(2022-06-21)
In hybrid fiber reinforcement, the combination of glass and regenerated cellulose fibers is a promising combination because the different properties of the fibers can be combined. The properties of the regenerated cellulose fiber in combination with the absorption of energy by fiber pull-outs can thus significantly increase the toughness of the composite in the event of failure, while the glass fiber significantly increases the stiffness and strength due to its properties. In this study, the interaction of the two ...

Socialism Order of Worth and Analytical Adequacy Axiom
(2022-06-15)
Boltanski and Thévenot (On justification. Economies of worth, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 2006) constructed in their seminal work On Justification the Orders of Worth (OW) framework as a research program for further empirical and theoretical development. This article suggests two methodological additions to extend the analytical capacities of the OW framework: The Socialism OW and the analytical adequacy axiom. The polito-philosophical Socialism OW, which acknowledges '(collective) welfare' as its mode of ...

SDG Performance in Local Organic Food Systems and the Role of Sustainable Public Procurement
(2022-09-14)
Alternative food systems have occupied a steady niche in the food systems transformation discourse as one of the transformative pathways capable of addressing many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Being one of the alternative approaches, organic food systems are often in the spotlight of transformation discussion. While their outcomes and, to a lesser extent, potential to address the SDGs have been documented, the attempts to provide empirical evidence for the latter contribution are largely ...

Evidence for Electron Transfer from the Bidirectional Hydrogenase to the Photosynthetic Complex I (NDH-1) in the Cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803
(2022-08-10)
The cyanobacterial bidirectional [NiFe]-hydrogenase is a pentameric enzyme. Apart from the small and large hydrogenase subunits (HoxYH) it contains a diaphorase module (HoxEFU) that interacts with NAD(P)+ and ferredoxin.
HoxEFU shows strong similarity to the outermost subunits (NuoEFG) of canonical respiratory complexes I. Photosynthetic complex I (NDH-1) lacks these three subunits. This led to the idea that HoxEFU might interact with NDH-1 instead. HoxEFUYH utilizes excited electrons from PSI for photohydrogen ...

Management Effects on the Performance of Double Cropping Systems - Results from a Multi-Site Experiment
(2022-09-04)
Traditional (silage) maize production often has negative side-effects related to unprotected soil surface. There are several possibilities to enhance system sustainability through reducing soil disturbance. However, implementation may be hindered due to reduced nitrogen availability and increased weed infestation, especially in organic agriculture. A field experiment to evaluate yield potential of 18 silage maize cropping systems under organic management was conducted at three distinct locations. Examined parameters ...

Multichannel single center method
(2022-08-10)
A multichannel single center (MCSC) method for the theoretical description of the electron continuum spectrum in molecules is reported. The method includes coupling between different continuum channels via electron correlations and describes, thereby, photoelectron continuum in the Tamm–Dancoff (configuration interaction singles) approximation. Basic equations of the non-iterative one-channel single center (SC) method and their extension to the MCSC method are presented, and an efficient scheme for their numerical ...

Living locked down – An autoethnographic approach to strategies of adaption to confined living in north Hesse, Germany
(2022-09-07)
Based on autoethnographic observations and phenomenological descriptions of everyday life, this article develops a theory about the connection between challenging housing experiences and the lockdown situation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. A special focus is placed on living in community, i.e. living permanently together with other people. The reorganisation of spatial routines and the bundling of these in the flat led to the development of new methods of everyday life in terms of work, leisure and social ...

Scanning the solutions for the sustainable supply of forest ecosystem services in Europe
(2022-03-22)
Forests are key components of European multifunctional landscapes and supply numerous forest ecosystem services (FES) fundamental to human well-being. The sustainable provision of FES has the potential to provide responses to major societal challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, or rural development. To identify suitable strategies for the future sustenance of FES, we performed a solution scanning exercise with a group of transdisciplinary forest and FES experts from different European regions. We ...

An 8-bit precision cipher for fast image encryption
(2022-04-21)
Implementing chaos based ciphers usually involves 32-bit floating-point arithmetics that is hardware resources costly. The limitation of the computational precision is hardware imposed and transforms chaotic orbits into limit cycles with short periods, hence alters their randomness. In cryptographic applications, short period dynamics and weak randomness result in security issues. In order to address this concern, we propose an 8-bit precision cipher that can be implemented with low-end microprocessors running 8-bit ...
