Agrarian change through speculation: Rural elites as land brokers for mining in Colombia
(2023-08-31)
This paper studies the connections between the expansion of mining capital, speculative forms of land grabbing and agrarian transformation. It is argued that in periods of commodity boom, the landowning rural elite benefits from mining through speculative land deals with mining companies. They act as ‘land brokers’ for the mining firms, helping them to overcome a significant barrier to land accumulation through the de facto abolition of landed property. The analysis is based on a qualitative case study on the expansion ...

Continuous modelling of single layer 2D carbonnanostructures based on a modified Cauchy–Born rule
(2023-09-08)
Graphene is the thinnest known structure. It consists of a single layer of carbon atoms and has unique mechanical properties. The carbon atoms form bonds with neighbouring atoms that can be described by interatomic potentials. A simulation of molecular mechanical processes can be performed by applying the formalism of the finite element method to the interatomic potentials. Neglecting local effects, a continuum formulation is an efficient alternative to a discrete model. The continuum formulation requires a connection ...

Saudi Arabian strategy reassessment since 2003: The emergence of a regional leadership via Neoclassical Realist lenses
(2023-06-12)
This article argues that the well-discussed international behaviour change in Saudi Arabia, rather than being a consequence of the so-called Arab Spring, resulted from a grand strategy reassessment in the early 2000s. Grand strategy concerns how states assess the geostrategic environment, plan resource allocation and prioritize policy to meet national interests. Since the 1970s, Riyadh judged its geopolitical vulnerabilities concerning Iran and Iraq realistically, supporting the least threatening actor from the two ...

Comparing teaching examples: effects on the solution quality and learning outcomes of student teachers’ professional vision of classroom management
(2023-11-01)
Young teachers, in particular, often face difficulties in managing their classrooms. A professional vision of classroom management can support teachers in managing a classroom effectively. This element of professional competence is often promoted in teacher training using video-based approaches, e.g., videoing own lessons including expert feedback, analyzing instructional videos and accompanying transcripts and analyzing videos of own and others teaching. This study used the learning format of comparing contrasting ...

Effects of task interruptions caused by notifications from communication applications on strain and performance
(2023-06-06)
Objectives:
To examine the effect of automatic communication notifications on performance and strain. Because of the benefits of communication, we expected this effect to be moderated by fear of missing out (FoMO) and social norms of responsiveness, expressed in the experience of telepressure.
Methods:
A field experiment (N = 247) was conducted in which participants in the experimental group disabled their notification during 1 day (N = 124).
Results:
The findings revealed that a reduction of notification-caused ...

Hybrid modeling of viscoelastic and switching–induced heating in ferroelectrics
(2023-03-24)
This contribution focuses on two effects causing a temperature change in electrically loaded ferroelectrics. These materials are often subjected to cyclic loading, where viscoelasticity prevails at lower electric fields, whereas dissipative heating by domain switching dominates above the coercive field. While viscoelasticity is modeled within a phenomenological, rheological framework, the ferroelectric constitutive behaviour is described based on a microphysical model. Merging both approaches results in the hybrid ...

Comparative quality analysis and economic feasibility of solar assisted yogurt processing unit for decentralized dairy value chain
(2023-04-27)
Due to the lack of farm-gate milk processing facilities, dairy farmers have to sell raw milk, resulting in economic and quality compromises. The study compared the quality of yogurt processed in solar assisted yogurt processing unit with the existing milk value chain and its techno-economic feasibility. For this, an investigation of the experiment was executed where four different milk processing approaches were compared. The quality attributes for processed milk like fat (5.283%), solid-not-fat (9.0833%), salts ...

Allocation of carbon dioxide emissions to the by-products of combined heat and power plants: A methodological guidance
(2023-10-07)
Cogeneration has higher efficiency than separate heat and power generation. Since both are generated in a single process, it is necessary to allocate the emissions to by-products for comparing their environmental performance. Numerous methods exist resulting in very different allocations. There is no consensus regarding the method choice. The main objective of this article is the development and implementation of an evaluation scheme allowing the choice of an appropriate method for specific applications. This scheme ...

Biodistricts as a tool to revitalize rural territories and communities: insights from the biodistrict Cilento
(2023-11-03)
The necessity and urgency of the food systems transformation is no longer questionable, and the transformation pathways are inevitably reappearing as a subject of academic and public debate. In search of sustainable food production strategies as part of a broader transformation, organic food systems are called for as one of the solutions to achieve environmentally friendly and just food systems. In this context, the role of biodistricts has been recently emphasized at the EU level. The authors of the manuscript argue ...

Identification of tumor tissue in thin pathological samples via femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and machine learning
(2023-06-08)
In the treatment of most newly discovered solid cancerous tumors, surgery remains the first treatment option. An important factor in the success of these operations is the precise identification of oncological safety margins to ensure the complete removal of the tumor without affecting much of the neighboring healthy tissue. Here we report on the possibility of applying femtosecond Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) combined with Machine Learning algorithms as an alternative discrimination technique to ...
