Dissimilar micro beam welding of titanium to Nitinol and stainless steel using biocompatible filler materials for medical applications
(2022-11-16)
In the present investigation, thin sheet geometries of commercially pure titanium (cp, grade 4) are butt-welded to AISI 316L stainless steel as well as Nitinol by means of micro electron beam welding using filler materials. In order to avoid mixing of the base materials, the refractory metals tantalum, niobium and hafnium are applied as intermediate layers. Owing to the biocompatibility of these filler materials, the final products are suitable for medical technology applications. In combination with low energy inputs ...

Optical Quality of InAs/InP Quantum Dots on Distributed Bragg Reflector Emitting at 3rd Telecom Window Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
(2021-10-21)
We present an experimental study on the optical quality of InAs/InP quantum dots (QDs). Investigated structures have application relevance due to emission in the 3rd telecommunication window. The nanostructures are grown by ripening-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. This leads to their unique properties, i.e., low spatial density and in-plane shape symmetry. These are advantageous for non-classical light generation for quantum technologies applications. As a measure of the internal quantum efficiency, the discrepancy ...

Effect of Compositional Variation Induced by EBM Processing on Deformation Behavior and Phase Stability of Austenitic Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP Steel
(2020-01-24)
Electron beam melting (EBM) is an established powder bed-based additive manufacturing process for the fabrication of complex-shaped metallic components. For metastable austenitic Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP steel, the formation of a homogeneous fine-grained microstructure and outstanding damage tolerance have been reported. However, depending on the process parameters, a certain fraction of Mn evaporates. This can have a significant impact on deformation mechanisms as well as kinetics, as was previously shown for as-cast material. ...

Force distribution in self-tapping screws: experimental investigations with fibre Bragg grating measurement screws
(2021-08-17)
The pull-out resistance of fully threaded, self-tapping screws under axial loading has been investigated intensively in the past. Actual design models are based mainly on empirical data because the detailed interaction between the screw thread and the surrounding timber member remains unclear and might depend on the test set-up. An innovative screw sensor with 19 internal fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) was developed to measure the forces along the screw axis. The screw diameter was 12 mm and the maximum embedding length ...

Performance of Thermo-Mechanically Processed AA7075 Alloy at Elevated Temperatures—From Microstructure to Mechanical Properties
(2020-07-03)
This study focuses on the high temperature characteristics of thermo-mechanically processed AA7075 alloy. An integrated die forming process that combines solution heat treatment and hot forming at different temperatures was employed to process the AA7075 alloy. Low die temperature resulted in the fabrication of parts with higher strength, similar to that of T6 condition, while forming this alloy in the hot die led to the fabrication of more ductile parts. Isothermal uniaxial tensile tests in the temperature range of ...

Characterization of Mechanical Properties, Macroscopic Deformation Behavior, and Microstructure of Functionally Graded 22MnB5 Steel
(2021-03-24)
The focus of this study is on the characterization of the local plastic deformation and failure of functionally graded 22MnB5 plates after hot stamping using an in situ approach. Various forming strategies at elevated temperatures are performed using differentially tempered forming tools to locally tailor the microstructure. By controlling the cooling rate, graded as well as martensitic and ferritic–pearlitic microstructures are obtained. Experimental analysis includes evaluation of the material- and geometry-dependent ...

Impact of Process Parameters and Bulk Properties on Quality of Dried Hops
(2020-11-20)
Hops are critical to the brewing industry. In commercial hop drying, a large bulk of hops is dried in multistage kilns for several hours. This affects the drying behavior and alters the amount and chemical composition of the hop oils. To understand these changes, hops of the var. Hallertauer Tradition were dried in bulks of 15, 25 and 35 kg/m² at 60 °C and 0.35 m/s. Additionally, bulks of 25 kg/m² were also dried at 65 °C and 0.45 m/s to assess the effect of change in temperature and velocity, respectively. The results ...

Fabrication and Characterization of Single-Crystal Diamond Membranes for Quantum Photonics with Tunable Microcavities
(2020-12-04)
The development of quantum technologies is one of the big challenges in modern research. A crucial component for many applications is an efficient, coherent spin–photon interface, and coupling single-color centers in thin diamond membranes to a microcavity is a promising approach. To structure such micrometer thin single-crystal diamond (SCD) membranes with a good quality, it is important to minimize defects originating from polishing or etching procedures. Here, we report on the fabrication of SCD membranes, with ...

Comparison of Spaceborne and UAV-Borne Remote Sensing Spectral Data for Estimating Monsoon Crop Vegetation Parameters
(2021-04-20)
Various remote sensing data have been successfully applied to monitor crop vegetation parameters for different crop types. Those successful applications mostly focused on one sensor system or a single crop type. This study compares how two different sensor data (spaceborne multispectral vs unmanned aerial vehicle borne hyperspectral) can estimate crop vegetation parameters from three monsoon crops in tropical regions: finger millet, maize, and lablab. The study was conducted in two experimental field layouts (irrigated ...

Micromagnetic Simulations of Submicron Vortex Structures for the Detection of Superparamagnetic Labels
(2020-10-15)
We present a numerical investigation on the detection of superparamagnetic labels using a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) vortex structure. For this purpose, the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation was solved numerically applying an external z-field for the activation of the superparamagnetic label. Initially, the free layer’s magnetization change due to the stray field of the label is simulated. The electric response of the GMR sensor is calculated by applying a self-consistent spin-diffusion model to the precomputed ...
