Crying in psychotherapy: an exploratory mixed-methods study on forms of emotional crying and associated therapeutic interventions
(2024-04-17)
Emotional tears can be interpreted as expressions of our deepest inner lives, and yet they have largely been ignored in psychotherapy research. This study addresses this gap. Based on grounded theory and using a sequential mixed-methods design, we examined the interaction between therapist and patient during episodes of crying in video-recorded psychotherapy sessions. This resulted in two rating systems: one differentiates forms of patient emotional crying, and the other categorizes therapeutic interventions associated ...

Improving Animal Health on Organic Dairy Farms: Stakeholder Views on Policy Options
(2020-04-09)
Although ensuring good animal health is a stated aim of organic livestock farming and an important reason why consumers purchase organic products, the health states actually achieved are comparable to those in conventional farming. Unfortunately, there have been no studies to date that have assessed stakeholder views on different policy options for improving animal health on organic dairy farms. To address this deficit, stakeholder consultations were conducted in four European countries, involving 39 supply-chain ...

Performance, carcass quality and meat quality of the endangered German Angler Saddleback pig
(2024-04-30)
The Angler Saddleback pig is an endangered local breed originating from Germany. The breed is said to have low demands in terms of husbandry and feeding, and an excellent meat quality. To date, there is a lack of more recent scientific investigations of the breed. Therefore, 58 Angler Saddleback pigs were fattened in two consecutive trials whereby performance, carcass quality and meat quality were assessed. At an average age of 324 days, the pigs reached an average final live weight of 143 kg, an intramuscular fat ...

Influence of deep rolling at different temperatures on near-surface and mechanical properties of a Maraging C250 steel
(2024-04-27)
Due to an outstanding combination of high strength and fracture toughness Maraging steels are used in numerous industries, e.g., in the aerospace sector. The high strength can be attributed to precipitation strengthening by conventional age-hardening heat treatments. However, as many of the envisaged applications will suffer from cyclic loadings, the fatigue properties are of significant interest in terms of a reliable use. Generally, Maraging steels are characterized by a relatively low fatigue strength limiting the ...

The environmental performance of plastic packaging waste management in Germany
(2023-07-28)
Plastic is a popular packaging material, but also criticized as a symbol for the make-use-dispose economy because of its short lifespan, its dependency on fossil fuels, and its potential contribution to marine litter. To identify current and potential future key factors for the environmental performance of plastic packaging waste (PPW) management in Germany, a life cycle assessment considering five different pathways of PPW (including deposit-refund systems, separately collected lightweight packaging waste, and ...

Articulation posture influences pitch during singing imagery
(2023-05-03)
Facial muscle activity contributes to singing and to articulation: in articulation, mouth shape can alter vowel identity; and in singing, facial movement correlates with pitch changes. Here, we examine whether mouth posture causally influences pitch during singing imagery. Based on perception–action theories and embodied cognition theories, we predict that mouth posture influences pitch judgments even when no overt utterances are produced. In two experiments (total N = 160), mouth posture was manipulated to resemble ...

PrOuD: Probabilistic Outlier Detection Solution for Time-Series Analysis of Real-World Photovoltaic Inverters
(2023-12-21)
Anomaly detection methods applied to time series are mostly viewed as black boxes that solely provide a deterministic answer for the detected target. Without a convincing explanation, domain experts can hardly trust the detection results and must conduct further time-series diagnoses in real-world applications. To overcome this challenge, we mathematically analyzed the sources of anomalies and novelties in multivariate time series as well as their relationships from the perspective of Gaussian-distributed non-stationary ...

System dynamics monitoring using PIC micro-controller-based PLSE
(2023-07-07)
The permutation largest slope entropy (PLSE) algorithm has been shown to be effective to distinguish between regular and non-regular dynamics from time series analysis. However, as it is the case for many non-linear time series analysis algorithms, such a characterization is locally made and does not allow one to capture some micro-phenomena, such as intermittency, that may occur in the system behavior. This paper presents a PIC micro-controller based implementation of the PLSE for a real-time monitoring of system ...

Ein übersehenes Märchen von Dorothea Viehmann
(2023-11-14)
Although the Brothers Grimm give a different indication of origin for the fairy tale Die weiße und die schwarze Braut (KHM 135), the correspondence of characteristic linguistic phenomena with the fairy tales of Dorothea Viehmann suggests that this tale could also have been contributed by her. With the help of the “original version” from the Berlin Grimm estate, a wealth of further linguistic-stylistic and lexical-motif evidence is presented that corroborates this attribution. Considerations of the history of transmission, ...

Main soil microbial groups assessed by phospholipid fatty acid analysis of temperate alley agroforestry systems on crop- and grassland
(2024-01-12)
The phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition of soils was analysed at three poplar-based silvo-arable systems and at one willow-based silvo-grassland alley agroforestry system in Central Germany. The objective was to analyse tree row effects on the PLFA composition of main fungal and main bacterial groups. The fungal groups were BAM (Basidiomycota + Ascomycota + Mucoromycota) and AMF (Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi). The bacterial groups were Gram-negative, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. The total PLFA content varied ...
