Investigating the Effect of Different Drying Strategies on the Quality Parameters of Daucus carota L. Using Dynamic Process Control and Measurement Techniques
(2021-03-21)
The present work aims to improve the understanding of the effect of different drying strategies at varying temperatures on the dynamic drying behaviour and quality of organic products such as carrots using non-invasive measurement techniques. For this purpose, carrot slices of 3 mm thickness were dried under three different strategies namely air temperature controlled (A), product temperature controlled (P) and stepwise temperature controlled (S) at different temperatures (50 °C, 60 °C and 70 °C) to measure and analyse ...

The Whole and the Parts—A New Perspective on Production Diseases and Economic Sustainability in Dairy Farming
(2021-08-12)
The levels of production diseases (PD) and the cow replacement rate are high in dairy farming. They indicate excessive production demands on the cow and a poor state of animal welfare. This is the subject of increasing public debate. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of production diseases on the economic sustainability of dairy farms. The contributions of individual culled cows to the farm’s economic performance were calculated, based on milk recording and accounting data from 32 farms in Germany. ...

How political philosophies can help to discuss and differentiate theories in community ecology
(2021-04-09)
This paper uses structural analogies to competing political philosophies of human society as a heuristic tool to differentiate between ecological theories and to bring out new aspects of apparently well-known classics of ecological scholarship. These two different areas of knowledge have in common that their objects are ‘societies’, i.e. units composed of individuals, and that contradictory and competing theories about these supra-individual units exist. The benefit of discussing ecological theories in terms of their ...

Facilitating business model innovation: The influence of sustainability and the mediating role of strategic orientations
(2021-01-04)
Businesses increasingly incorporate the sustainability aspects into their products, services, and processes that drive innovation. While extant research on the linkage between sustainability and innovation has gained momentum over the past years, prior research has predominantly focused on sustainability's performance impacts (e.g., financially and environmentally) and product innovation outputs, neglecting the internal mechanisms that leverage sustainability. While findings from previous studies suggest that ...

Use of Design of Experiments (DoE) to Model the Sulphate Agent Amount of (Ultra)Finely Ground and Fast Hardening Portland Cement Clinker
(2021-09-25)
This paper presents a model to calculate the sulphate agent amount and sulphate agent ratio for fine grounded and fast hardening Portland cement clinker. Despite sufficient knowledge about the influence of calcium sulphate on the hydration process of cement, the sulphate agent amount is mostly adjusted empirically. As a result, often a wide and unfeasible experimental matrix has to be tested. In this work, Design of Experiments (DoE) was used in combination with in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests to accurately ...

Basteln, matschen und toben während der Coronakrise
(2021-11-26)

Urm1, not quite a ubiquitin-like modifier?
(2021-09-09)
Ubiquitin related modifier 1 (Urm1) is a unique eukaryotic member of the ubiquitin-fold (UbF) protein family and conserved from yeast to humans. Urm1 is dual-functional, acting both as a sulfur carrier for thiolation of tRNA anticodons and as a protein modifier in a lysine-directed Ub-like conjugation also known as urmylation. Although Urm1 conjugation coincides with oxidative stress and targets proteins like 2-Cys peroxiredoxins from yeast (Ahp1) and fly (Prx5), it was unclear how urmylation proceeds molecularly and ...

Optical Quality of InAs/InP Quantum Dots on Distributed Bragg Reflector Emitting at 3rd Telecom Window Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
(2021-10-21)
We present an experimental study on the optical quality of InAs/InP quantum dots (QDs). Investigated structures have application relevance due to emission in the 3rd telecommunication window. The nanostructures are grown by ripening-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. This leads to their unique properties, i.e., low spatial density and in-plane shape symmetry. These are advantageous for non-classical light generation for quantum technologies applications. As a measure of the internal quantum efficiency, the discrepancy ...

Perceptions of Vegan Food among Organic Food Consumers Following Different Diets
(2021-08-31)
This article identifies consumer segments for vegan food by analysing perceptions of vegan food among food organic consumers following different diets: vegans, vegetarians, former vegetarians, flexitarians, and omnivores. The analysis is based on responses to a quantitative consumer survey for which 503 participants were recruited from customers at German grocery stores by quota sampling according to diet and region. From the responses to an open-ended question eliciting the participants’ associations with vegan food, ...

Neither vitalist nor mechanist, neither dualist nor idealist: Plessner's third way
(2021-05-21)
The English translation of Helmuth Plessner’s (1892–1985) volume Levels of the Organic Life and the Human. An Introduction to Philosophical Anthropology (1928; henceforth: LO) finally fills in a long-lamented gap. An English translation already existed of other important essays by Plessner, such as Laughing and Crying: A Study of the Limits of Human Behaviour (1941; Eng. 1970); The Limits of Community. A Critique of Social Radicalism (1924; Eng. 1999); and more recently (in 2018) of Political Anthropology (originally ...
