A Novel Approach to Inhibit Intergranular Corrosion in Ferritic Stainless Steel Welds Using High-Speed Laser Cladding
(2021-12-15)
Ferritic stainless steels are prone to localized corrosion phenomena such as pitting corrosion or intergranular corrosion, in particular when jointed by fusion welding processes. State-of-the-art techniques to avoid intergranular corrosion mainly consist of alternating alloy concepts or post-weld heat-treatments—all of which are associated with increased production costs. Hence, the present investigation seeks to introduce a novel approach for the inhibition of intergranular corrosion in ferritic stainless steel welds ...

Control of Jump Markov Uncertain Linear Systems With General Probability Distributions
(2022-02-25)
This paper introduces a method to control a class of jump Markov linear systems with uncertain initialization of the continuous state and affected by disturbances. Both types of uncertainties are modeled as stochastic processes with arbitrarily chosen probability distributions, for which however, the expected values and (co-)variances are known. The paper elaborates on the control task of steering the uncertain system into a target set by use of continuous controls, while chance constraints have to be satisfied for ...

Heat Load Profiles in Industry and the Tertiary Sector: Correlation with Electricity Consumption and Ex Post Modeling
(2022-03-29)
The accurate prediction of heat load profiles with a daily resolution is required for a broad range of applications, such as potential studies, design, or predictive operation of heating systems. If the heat demand of a consumer mainly originates from (production) processes independent of the ambient temperature, existing load profile prediction methods fail. To close this gap, this study develops two ex post machine learning models for the prediction of the heat demand with a daily resolution. The selected input ...

Harnessing the Potential of Wheat-Pea Species Mixtures: Evaluation of Multifunctional Performance and Wheat Diversity
(2022-03-25)
Species mixtures and heterogeneous crop populations are two promising approaches for diversified ecological cropping systems with increased resilience and reduced dependency on external inputs. Inter- and intraspecific diversity were evaluated in combination using 15 wheat (Triticum aestivum) entries, including line cultivars and heterogeneous populations (HPs), from central Europe and Hungary and one winter pea cultivar under organic conditions. Monocultures and wheat mixtures were evaluated multi-functionally for ...

Palaeoecological Interpretation of a Late Holocene Sediment Sequence from the Alpine Belt of the Southern Mongolian Altai Mountains
(2022-02-17)
The climate in the Altai Mountains is determined by two major climate systems whose dominance has varied over time, leading to significant spatio-temporal changes in temperature and precipitation during the Holocene. This study aimed at the reconstruction of the local to regional moisture and temperature conditions in an alpine belt of the southern Mongolian Altai during the Late Holocene. It thereby contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the region’s palaeoclimate in the Holocene. Our reconstruction ...

Team Regulatory Focus and its Role for Idea Generation, Idea Implementation, and Innovative Performance: A Dynamic Perspective
(2021-05-27)
In an experimental study, we explored the relationships between team regulatory focus and temporal patterns of innovative activities as well as innovative performance. We manipulated regulatory focus in 44 student teams and assessed idea generation and implementation activities over time based on video data. External raters assessed innovative performance. Latent growth curve models revealed that higher team promotion focus increased idea generation at the beginning of an innovative project but decreased this activity ...

Fully Implicit RUNGE-KUTTA Schemes for Ideal Elastoplasticity
(2021-12-14)
The present paper derives a multifield formulation of ideal elastoplasticity to enable the consistent application of higher order accurate RUNGE-KUTTA schemes. With the help of an axisymmetric model problem the appearing time discretization errors of distinct schemes are determined and compared.

Efficiency and agility of a liquid CO2 cooling system for molten metal systems
(2021-09-24)
In this study investigations on the efficiency and agility of a liquid CO2 cooling system, using expansion bores fed with liquid CO2 by capillary tubes, to form a thermal seal in a magnesium hot runner channel are performed in a test rig. Via temperature measurements the performance of different sets of cooling parameters is tested and cooling rates are identified depended on a varying nozzle geometry. To validate the measurements, the tests are modelled in a thermal simulation study. The applicability of the liquid ...

Cyclic nucleotide-dependent ionic currents in olfactory receptor neurons of the hawkmoth Manduca sexta suggest pull–push sensitivity modulation
(2021-06-14)
Olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) of the hawkmoth Manduca sexta sensitize via cAMP- and adapt via cGMP-dependent mechanisms. Perforated patch clamp recordings distinguished 11 currents in these ORNs. Derivatives of cAMP and/or cGMP antagonistically affected three of five K+ currents and two non-specific cation currents. The Ca2+-dependent K+ current IK(Ca2+) and the sensitive pheromone-dependent K+ current IK(cGMP−), which both express fast kinetics, were inhibited by 8bcGMP, while a slow K+ current, IK(cGMP+), was ...

The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is vulnerable to moderate electric fields
(2021-09-13)
Most of the ongoing projects aimed at the development of specific therapies and vaccines against COVID-19 use the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein as the main target. The binding of the spike protein with the ACE2 receptor (ACE2) of the host cell constitutes the first and key step for virus entry. During this process, the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the S protein plays an essential role, since it contains the receptor binding motif (RBM), responsible for the docking to the receptor. So far, mostly biochemical methods ...
