Validation of cognitive load during inquiry-based learning with multimedia scaffolds using subjective measurement and eye movements
(2021-08-31)
Subject-method barriers and cognitive load (CL) of students have a particular importance in the complex learning process of scientific inquiry. In this work, we investigate the valid measurement of CL as well as different scaffolds to reduce it during experimentation. Specifically, we examine the validity of a subjective measurement instrument to assess CL [in extraneous cognitive load (ECL), intrinsic cognitive load, and germane cognitive load (GCL)] during the use of multimedia scaffolds in the planning phase of ...

Modelling the fate of pesticide transformation products from plot to catchment scale—state of knowledge and future challenges
(2021-07-29)
Transformation products (TP) of pesticides are found everywhere in the aquatic environment. Their dynamic formation and subsequent transport from agricultural fields to adjacent water bodies can be estimated by using environmental fate models, which is done in the registration process for plant protection products in the European Union. In this study, peer-reviewed applications of such models, the model complexity and their structure are documented and analysed. In total, 20 publications of 10 models – eight leaching ...

The Effect of Pre-Drying Treatment and Drying Conditions on Quality and Energy Consumption of Hot Air-Dried Celeriac Slices: Optimisation
(2021-07-29)
Celeriac is a good source of fibre, trace minerals, and phenolic compounds; it has a pleasant aroma but is a perishable material, prone to discolouration. This research investigated the optimisation of the quality and energy demand in hot-air dried celeriac slices. The experiment utilised the I-optimal design of response surface methodology with 30 experiment runs. Pre-drying treatments (blanching at 85 °C, three minutes; dipping in 1% citric acid solution, three minutes; no pre-drying treatment), drying temperatures ...

Distributed Energy Balance Flux Modelling of Mass Balances in the Artesonraju Glacier and Discharge in the Basin of Artesoncocha, Cordillera Blanca, Peru
(2021-09-17)
A distributed energy balance model (DEBAM) is applied to estimate the mass balance of the Artesonraju glacier in the Cordillera Blanca (CB), Peru, and to simulate the ensuing discharge into its respective basin, Artesoncocha. The energy balance model calibrations show that, by using seasonal albedos, reasonable results for mass balances and discharge can be obtained, as witnessed by annually aggregated Nash Sutcliffe coefficients (E) of 0.60–0.87 for discharge and of 0.58–0.71 for mass measurements carried out in the ...

Sensitivity of Convection-Permitting Regional Climate Simulations to Changes in Land Cover Input Data: Role of Land Surface Characteristics for Temperature and Climate Extremes
(2021-10-14)
Characterization of climate uncertainties due to different land cover maps in regional climate models is essential for adaptation strategies. The spatiotemporal heterogeneity in surface characteristics is considered to play a key role in terrestrial surface processes. Here, we quantified the sensitivity of model results to changes in land cover input data (GlobCover 2009, GLC 2000, CCI, and ECOCLIMAP) in the regional climate model (RCM) COSMO-CLM (v5.0_clm16). We investigated land cover changes due to the retrieval ...

An Overview of the Use of Genotyping Techniques for Assessing Genetic Diversity in Local Farm Animal Breeds
(2021-07-06)
The number of local farm animal breeds is declining worldwide. However, these breeds have different degrees of genetic diversity. Measuring genetic diversity is important for the development of conservation strategies and, therefore, various genomic analysis techniques are available. The aim of the present work was to shed light on the use of these techniques in diversity studies of local breeds. In summary, a total of 133 worldwide studies that examined genetic diversity in local cattle, sheep, goat, chicken and pig ...

The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein is vulnerable to moderate electric fields
(2021-09-13)
Most of the ongoing projects aimed at the development of specific therapies and vaccines against COVID-19 use the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein as the main target. The binding of the spike protein with the ACE2 receptor (ACE2) of the host cell constitutes the first and key step for virus entry. During this process, the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the S protein plays an essential role, since it contains the receptor binding motif (RBM), responsible for the docking to the receptor. So far, mostly biochemical methods ...

Multiscale modeling of ferroelectrics with stochastic grain size distribution
(2021-12-20)
Macroscopic properties of ferroelectrics are controlled by processes on the microscale, in particular the switching of crystal unit cells and the movement of domain walls, respectively. Besides these microscopic levels, the grains of a polycrystalline material constitute the mesoscopic scale. Interactions of grains with statistically distributed orientations, as a consequence of mechanical and electrostatic mismatch, give rise to for example, residual stress which in turn affects domain switching. A multiscale modeling ...

Land cover transitions and effects of transhumance on available forage biomass of rangelands in Benin
(2021-11-30)
This study examined the effects of transhumance pressure on total abavoe-ground biomass and forage availability on rangelands in Benin. We also investigated the implications of land cover transitions on rangelands over a 31-year period. Our work was carried out in three regions of Benin representing distinct phytogeographic regimes: Ketou, Tchaourou, and Sinende. Ground-truthing and biomass sampling of the herbaceous and phanaerophyte strata were carried out between the 2016 peak vegetation period and the onset of ...

The impact of livestock grazing and canopy gaps on species pool and functional diversity of ground flora in the Caspian beech forests of Iran
(2021-06-05)
Questions
Livestock grazing is an important disturbance in many forest ecosystems. While several studies have addressed the general impact of different grazing and light intensities on temperate forest ecosystems, little is known about how the combination of these two factors can affect the species pool and functional diversity of temperate forests.
Location
Oriental beech forests of northern Iran.
Methods
Vegetation and environmental data of 104 relevés were collected. These were assigned to four groups based ...
