Critical evaluation of biochar effects on methane production and process stability in anaerobic digestion
(2023-07-18)
Biochar is an emerging biomaterial for managing residual biomass while simultaneously sequestering carbon. To extend the biochar value chain, applying biochar to enhance anaerobic digestion (AD) processes is gaining attention in the context of a circular economy and cascading use of biomass. However, the comparative effects of various biochar dosages under normal and severe AD conditions are still unclear. To further our understanding of its potential application, this work investigated the impact of adding various ...

Legitimacy, Shared Understanding and Exchange of Resources: Co-managing Lakes Along an Urban–Rural Gradient in Greater Bengaluru Metropolitan Region, India
(2023-02-10)
Co-management is increasingly seen as a way forward in natural resource management and collective goods provisioning, especially in the management of urban commons. Co-management entails sharing of power between actors, including elements such as exchange of information and resources as well as changes in regulations favouring the development of common goals among actors. In this paper, we try to understand if and how preconditions of legitimacy, shared understanding and exchange of resources combine to facilitate ...

Impact of bias correction on climate change signals over central Europe and the Iberian Peninsula
(2023-07-27)
Vegetation models for climate adaptation and mitigation strategies require spatially high-resolution climate input data in which the error with respect to observations has been previously corrected. To quantify the impact of bias correction, we examine the effects of quantile-mapping bias correction on the climate change signal (CCS) of climate, extremes, and biological variables from the convective regional climate model COSMO-CLM and two dynamic vegetation models (LPJ-GUESS and CARAIB). COSMO-CLM was driven and ...

Optimised use of data fusion and memory-based learning with an Austrian soil library for predictions with infrared data
(2023-06-24)
Infrared spectroscopy in the visible to near-infrared (vis–NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) regions is a well-established approach for the prediction of soil properties. Different data fusion and training approaches exist, and the optimal procedures are yet undefined and may depend on the heterogeneity present in the set and on the considered scale. The objectives were to test the usefulness of partial least squares regressions (PLSRs) for soil organic carbon (SOC), total carbon (Ct), total nitrogen (Nt) and pH using ...

Small villages and their sanitary infrastructure—an unnoticed influence on water quantity and a threat to water quality in headwater catchments
(2023-11-16)
In rural catchments, villages often feature their own, separate urban water infrastructure, including combined sewer overflows (CSOs) or wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). These point sources affect the water quantity and quality of the receiving low order streams. However, the extent of this impact is rarely monitored. We installed discharge and water quality measurements at the outlet of two small, neighbouring headwater catchments, one that includes a village, a WWTP, and two CSOs, while the other is predominantly ...

Soil respiration under different N fertilization and irrigation regimes in Bengaluru, S-India
(2023-09-15)
Rapid urbanization in many countries of the Global South has led to intensification of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) whose effects on the soils’ physical, chemical, and microbial properties have been hardly studied. We therefore investigated the effects of different intensity levels, exemplified by three rates of mineral nitrogen (N) addition and irrigation on CO₂ emissions in typical crops during the wet (Kharif) and dry (Rabi) season on a Nitisol in Bengaluru, S-India. Respiration data were collected from ...

Disentangling the practice of landscape approaches: a Q-method analysis on experiences in socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes
(2023-03-23)
Landscape approaches are gaining momentum in both scientific and policy agendas. However, landscape approaches comprise a multitude of concepts, approaches and principles, which are in part similar, in some parts different or even contradictory. In this paper, we used a Q-method questionnaire to explore how landscape approaches are understood and employed in 45 case studies of socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes derived from the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), as well ...

Water quality footprint of agricultural emissions of nitrogen, phosphorus and glyphosate associated with German bioeconomy
(2023-11-02)
Fertiliser and pesticide application can cause extensive environmental damage. We use the water quality footprint to express nitrogen, phosphorus and glyphosate emissions from agriculture in volumes of water needed to virtually dilute pollution and apply the approach to agricultural imports for the German bioeconomy in 1995 and 2020. In total, the virtual German water quality footprint corresponds to 90 times the volume of Lake Constance. If water pollution had to be eliminated by dilution in export countries supplying ...

Embedding plural values in value chains to enhance sustainability in the management of cork oak landscapes
(2023-07-19)
Context
The management of Portuguese agroforestry landscapes is currently focused on specialised cork and cattle production. Sustainable landscape management is increasingly discussed as an effective option to foster the multifunctionality of these landscapes. Such management requires consideration of multiple values connected to the landscape and to the products stemming from it.
Objectives
The aim of this study is to (1) assess the importance of specific values related to cork and to the cork production ...
