On the Automation of Flood Event Separation From Continuous Time Series
(2020-07-28)
Can machine learning effectively lower the effort necessary to extract important information from raw data for hydrological research questions? On the example of a typical water-management task, the extraction of direct runoff flood events from continuous hydrographs, we demonstrate how machine learning can be used to automate the application of expert knowledge to big data sets and extract the relevant information. In particular, we tested seven different algorithms to detect event beginning and end solely from a ...

Influence of hot deformation on the precipitation hardening of high-strength aluminum AA7075 during thermo-mechanical processing
(2021-04-21)
The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of hot deformation on the aging behavior of precipitation-hardenable aluminum alloy AA7075 within a novel thermo-mechanical forming process, in order to gain insight into its precipitation kinetics. For this purpose, the material was formed at 420 °C after undergoing solution treatment to different strain levels ranging from 2% to 10% to obtain different dislocation densities. After undergoing hot deformation, aging at 120 °C with different parameters was carried out ...

Experimentelle Untersuchung zur Mehrphasenströmung in öleingespritzten Mehrphasenschraubenspindelpumpen
(2020-02-18)

Sustainability assessment of activated carbon from residual biomass used for micropollutant removal at a full-scale wastewater treatment plant
(2020-05-29)
Activated carbon (AC), used for removal of organic micropollutants in European wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), is usually produced from non-renewable resources that need to be transported over long distances. Utilising local residual biomass as a raw material may be advantageous in terms of sustainability. This study investigated the environmental and energy balances of using biowaste and biomass from landscape management for micropollutant removal at a commercial scale WWTP. Both residual biomasses were processed ...

Mode properties of telecom wavelength InP-based high-(Q/V) L4/3 photonic crystal cavities
(2020-05-13)
We present finite-difference time domain simulations and optical characterizations via micro-photoluminescence measurements of InP-based L4/3 photonic crystal cavities with embedded quantum dots (QDs) and designed for the M1 ground mode to be emitting at telecom C-band wavelengths. The simulated M1 Q-factor values exceed 106, while the M1 mode volume is found to be 0.33 × (λ/n)3, which is less than half the value of the M1 mode volume of a comparable L3 cavity. Low-temperature micro-photoluminescence measurements ...

Drought stress triggers differential survival and functional trait responses in the establishment of Arnica montana seedlings
(2021-07-15)
- The establishment and survival of seedlings are critical stages in the life cycle of plants and therefore usually well timed to humid and favourable conditions. Climate projections suggest that the threatened mountain grassland species Arnica montana may be increasingly exposed to drought stress. However, studies that focus on the species’ early development are missing. We evaluated impacts of drought-induced stress on A. montana seedlings in their early establishment phase and identified traits that could cause ...

Indicators of Affect Dynamics: Structure, Reliability, and Personality Correlates
(2020-07-21)
Researchers are increasingly interested in the affect dynamics of individuals for describing and explaining personality and psychopathology. Recently, the incremental validity of more complex indicators of affect dynamics (IADs; e.g. autoregression) has been called into question (Dejonckheere et al., 2019), with evidence accumulating that these might convey little unique information beyond mean level and general variability of emotions. Our study extends the evidence for the construct validity of IADs by investigating ...

Morphologically similar but not closely related: the long-sporedspecies of Subulicystidium (Trechisporales, Basidiomycota)
(2020-06-06)
Species boundaries and geographic distribution of corticioid fungi (resupinate Basidiomycota) are often poorly known. Ourrecent study onSubulicystidiumshowed that species diversity in this genus is at least twice as high as previously recognized. Thisre-estimation of the species diversity was based on a study of only a part of the genus. The present study sheds light on molecularand morphological diversity of three more species. We generated 27 ITS and 24 28S nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences from 49specimens labelled ...

Iterative feature detection of a coded checkerboard target for the geometric calibration of infrared cameras
(2021-08-11)
The geometric calibration of cameras becomes necessary when images should be undistorted, geometric image information is needed or data from more than one camera have to be fused. This process is often done using a target with a checkerboard or circular pattern and a given geometry. In this work, a coded checkerboard target for thermal imaging cameras and the corresponding image processing algorithm for iterative feature detection are presented. It is shown that, due in particular to the resulting better feature ...

Animal Welfare Consequences of Organic Boar Fattening and Occurrence of Boar Taint on Five Commercial Farms
(2021-10-10)
Simple Summary
The usual castration of male fattening pigs is under discussion, especially in organic farming, because of the negative effects on the pig’s welfare and integrity. Nevertheless, it is feared that boars show more aggressive and mounting behaviours, resulting in stress, painful injuries and lameness, and that their meat has an unpleasant odour/taste (called “boar taint”). Therefore, it was examined to which extent these concerns come true under commercial organic conditions. Additionally, influences ...
