Integrative-interpersonal dynamic therapy for poststroke depression (INID): study protocol of a randomised controlled pilot trial
(2023-08-08)
Introduction Depression is the most frequent psychiatric disorder following stroke, affecting about one-third of stroke survivors. Patients experience poorer recovery, lower quality of life and higher mortality compared with stroke survivors without depression. Despite these well-known malign consequences, poststroke depression (PSD) is regarded underdiagnosed and undertreated. Evidence of beneficial effects of psychotherapy to treat PSD remains scarce and inconclusive and is limited by heterogeneity in design, content ...

Evaluating the role of maladaptive personality traits in schema therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy for depression
(2022-05-10)
Background: Advancements in the treatment of depression are pivotal due to high levels of non-response and relapse. This study evaluated the role of personality pathology in the treatment of depression by testing whether maladaptive personality traits (1) predict changes in depression over treatment or vice versa, (2) change themselves over treatment, (3) change differentially depending on treatment with schema therapy (ST) or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and (4) moderate the effectiveness of these ...

Challenges in detecting proximal effects of existential threat on lie detection accuracy
(2022-06-14)
The present work documents our investigation of proximal (i.e., immediate) effects of existential threat on the process of lie detection. Specifically, we hypothesized that lie detection accuracy will be higher in a mortality salience (MS) condition compared with the control condition. In two lab-based studies (N = 120; N = 109) and one internet study (N = 1294), we did not find any evidence for this hypothesis, that is, MS effects on lie detection accuracy were constantly not significant. However, these null findings ...

Effects of task interruptions caused by notifications from communication applications on strain and performance
(2023-06-06)
Objectives:
To examine the effect of automatic communication notifications on performance and strain. Because of the benefits of communication, we expected this effect to be moderated by fear of missing out (FoMO) and social norms of responsiveness, expressed in the experience of telepressure.
Methods:
A field experiment (N = 247) was conducted in which participants in the experimental group disabled their notification during 1 day (N = 124).
Results:
The findings revealed that a reduction of notification-caused ...

Is It the Judge, the Sender, or Just the Individual Message? Disentangling Person and Message Effects on Variation in Lie-Detection Judgments
(2023-02-15)
Research suggests that people differ more in their ability to lie than in their ability to detect lies. However, because studies have not treated senders and messages as separate entities, it is unclear whether some senders are generally more transparent than others or whether individual messages differ in their transparency of veracity regardless of senders. Variance attributable to judges, senders, and messages was estimated simultaneously using multiple messages from each sender (totaling more than 45,000 judgments). ...

The correlation between honesty-humility and attitude toward counterfeit luxury
(2023-10-18)
This research focuses on the relation between Honesty-Humility and attitude toward counterfeit luxury. Honesty-Humility is defined as the tendency to be fair in dealing with others. Given that the act of knowingly purchasing a counterfeit could be judged as morally questionable, immodest, and manipulative, we predicted that people lower in Honesty-Humility would report more positive attitudes toward counterfeit luxury. Given that related research from behavioral research revealed Honesty-Humility to be the key predictor ...

Free to See the Big Picture: Autonomy Increases Abstractness of Action Identification
(2023-10-10)
People sometimes feel autonomous—free to choose and able to control their actions; at other times, they feel restricted in what they can do and what the outcome will be. Based on Action Identification Theory, the present work examines whether autonomy influences how abstractly actions are represented. In 6 studies, high (vs. low) autonomy increased abstractness of action identification. Participants selected more abstract (vs. concrete) redescriptions of actions when they imagined wanting (vs. having) to perform these ...

Fostering diagnostic competence in prospective mathematics elementary teachers through epistemic activities
(2023-12-21)
Research on fostering teachers’ diagnostic competence and thinking has become increasingly important. To this end, research has already identified several aspects of effective fostering of teachers’ diagnostic competence. One of the aspects is assignment of the role as a teacher in interventions but, so far, assignment of the role of student has hardly been considered. Based on a model of the diagnostic thinking process, this paper operationalizes the role of the student by solving specific tasks and the role of the ...

Recovered memories in psychotherapy: a survey of practicing psychotherapists in Germany
(2024-01-29)
We report on a survey of 258 psychotherapists from Germany, focusing on their experiences with memory recovery in general, suggestive therapy procedures, evaluations of recovered memories, and memory recovery in training and guidelines. Most therapists (78%) reported instances of memory recovery encompassing negative and positive childhood experiences, but usually in a minority of patients. Also, most therapists (82%) reported to have held assumptions about unremembered trauma. Patients who held these beliefs were ...

Suffizienz – Psychische Ressourcen – Transformation
(2023-08-07)
