Sugar Beet Damage Detection during Harvesting Using Different Convolutional Neural Network Models
(2021-11-09)
Mechanical damages of sugar beet during harvesting affects the quality of the final products and sugar yield. The mechanical damage of sugar beet is assessed randomly by operators of harvesters and can depend on the subjective opinion and experience of the operator due to the complexity of the harvester machines. Thus, the main aim of this study was to determine whether a digital two-dimensional imaging system coupled with convolutional neural network (CNN) techniques could be utilized to detect visible mechanical ...

Mirau-Based CSI with Oscillating Reference Mirror for Vibration Compensation in In-Process Applications
(2021-10-15)
We present a Mirau-type coherence scanning interferometer (CSI) with an oscillating reference mirror and an integrated interferometric distance sensor (IDS) sharing the optical path with the CSI. The IDS works simultaneously with the CSI and measures the distance changes during the depth scanning process with high temporal resolution. The additional information acquired by the IDS is used to correct the CSI data disturbed by unwanted distance changes due to environmental vibrations subsequent to the measurement. Due ...

Stakeholder management in sustainable supply chains: A case study of the bioenergy industry
(2021-05-01)
Engaging with stakeholders and managing their issues when striving for a sustainable supply chain (SC) is a significant challenge. Although most studies on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) consider stakeholder management necessary, little is known about related stakeholder management practices in SSCM. Thus, this paper seeks to enrich the theoretical debate on stakeholder management practices in SSCM through a case study approach to bioenergy SCs in Chile. Based on 28 interviews with SC actors and representatives ...

Smallholders’ Challenges: Realizing Peri-Urban Opportunities in Bengaluru
(2021-09-10)
Urban expansion creates potential for increased incomes among previously rural smallholders from sources other than traditional agriculture. Harnessing this potential, however, requires investments into agricultural upgrading or non-farm activities. The article addresses the question concerning to what extent these investments are realised in the peri-urban space of Bengaluru. Its answers are based on a review of the literature and extensive field surveys in two differentially developed districts assessing the ...

Combining Genetic Gain and Diversity in Plant Breeding: Heritability of Root Selection in Wheat Populations
(2021-11-18)
To increase the resilience of agroecological farming systems against weeds, pests, and pathogens, evolutionary breeding of diversified crop populations is highly promising. A fundamental challenge in population breeding is to combine effective selection and breeding progress while maintaining intraspecific diversity. A hydroponic system was tested for its suitability to non-destructively select root traits on a population level in order to achieve genetic gain and maintain diversity. Forty wheat progenies were selected ...

Fully Implicit RUNGE-KUTTA Schemes for Ideal Elastoplasticity
(2021-12-14)
The present paper derives a multifield formulation of ideal elastoplasticity to enable the consistent application of higher order accurate RUNGE-KUTTA schemes. With the help of an axisymmetric model problem the appearing time discretization errors of distinct schemes are determined and compared.

Synthesis, Structure and Cu-Phenylacetylide Coordination of an Unsymmetrically Substituted Bulky dppf-Analog
(2021-12-03)
The donor properties of a set of bulky ferrocene based bisphosphanes (Fe(C₅H₄PMes₂)₂ and (C₅H₄PMes₂)Fe(C₅H₄PᵗBu₂ with Mes= mesityl and ᵗBu=tert-butyl) were probed by exploring the NMR parameters of the corresponding selenophosphoranes amended by cyclovoltammetry. The ligand properties were explored in the complexation of copper phenylacetylide which is relevant as intermediate in the Cu(I) catalyzed CO₂ addition to phenylacetylene. Owing to the poor solubility of the resulting complexes their characterization was ...

The impact of livestock grazing and canopy gaps on species pool and functional diversity of ground flora in the Caspian beech forests of Iran
(2021-06-05)
Questions
Livestock grazing is an important disturbance in many forest ecosystems. While several studies have addressed the general impact of different grazing and light intensities on temperate forest ecosystems, little is known about how the combination of these two factors can affect the species pool and functional diversity of temperate forests.
Location
Oriental beech forests of northern Iran.
Methods
Vegetation and environmental data of 104 relevés were collected. These were assigned to four groups based ...

Agro-ecological landuse transformation in oasis systems of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, northern Oman
(2021-04-08)
The millenia-old oasis systems in the Western Hajar Mountains of Northern Oman have received widespread attention as models of sustainable irrigated agriculture in hyperarid Arabia. Given Oman’s rampant urbanization, growing scarcity of water and skilled labour, we quantified chances in water use, land use, and land cover between 2007 and 2018 using a rare time-series approach of detailed GIS-based crop mapping. Results from satellite image analysis and comprehensive ground truthing showed that urban areas grew from ...

Evidence of considerable C and N transfer from peas to cereals via direct root contact but not via mycorrhiza
(2021-06-01)
Intercropping of legumes and cereals is an important management method for improving yield stability, especially in organic farming systems. However, knowledge is restricted on the relevance of different nutrient transfer pathways. The objective of the study was to quantify nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) transfer from peas to triticale by (1) direct root contact (= R), (2) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF; = A), and (3) diffusion (= D). Pea (Pisum sativum cv. Frisson and P2) and triticale (Triticum × Secale cv. Benetto) ...
