Influence of hot deformation on the precipitation hardening of high-strength aluminum AA7075 during thermo-mechanical processing
(2021-04-21)
The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of hot deformation on the aging behavior of precipitation-hardenable aluminum alloy AA7075 within a novel thermo-mechanical forming process, in order to gain insight into its precipitation kinetics. For this purpose, the material was formed at 420 °C after undergoing solution treatment to different strain levels ranging from 2% to 10% to obtain different dislocation densities. After undergoing hot deformation, aging at 120 °C with different parameters was carried out ...

High-Speed Laser Cladding on Thin-Sheet-Substrates—Influence of Process Parameters on Clad Geometry and Dilution
(2021-08-09)
Laser-based Directed Energy Deposition (DED-LB) represents a production method of growing importance for cladding and additive manufacturing through the use of metal powders. Yet, most studies utilize substrate materials with thicknesses of multiple millimeters, for which laser cladding of thin-sheet substrates with thicknesses less than 1 mm have only been scarcely studied in the literature. Most studies cover the use of pulsed laser sources, since sheet distortion due to excess energy input is a key problem in laser ...

Extension of Gap Bridgeability and Prevention of Oxide Lines in the Welding Seam through Application of Tools with Multi-Welding Pins
(2021-07-30)
Friction stir welding has become important in many areas of production and is increasingly used for joining aluminum components. For long welding seams, conventional tools with only one welding pin reach their technical limitations due to low gap bridgeability. When welding aluminum, the stirred in surface layers, such as oxides, lead to a decrease in static and dynamic strength since linear accumulations are formed in the welding seam. The aim of the present study is to increase the gap bridgeability using tools ...

Use of Design of Experiments (DoE) to Model the Sulphate Agent Amount of (Ultra)Finely Ground and Fast Hardening Portland Cement Clinker
(2021-09-25)
This paper presents a model to calculate the sulphate agent amount and sulphate agent ratio for fine grounded and fast hardening Portland cement clinker. Despite sufficient knowledge about the influence of calcium sulphate on the hydration process of cement, the sulphate agent amount is mostly adjusted empirically. As a result, often a wide and unfeasible experimental matrix has to be tested. In this work, Design of Experiments (DoE) was used in combination with in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests to accurately ...

Laser Powder Bed Fusion Processing of Fe-Mn-Al-Ni Shape Memory Alloy—On the Effect of Elevated Platform Temperatures
(2021-01-20)
In order to overcome constraints related to crack formation during additive processing (laser powder bed fusion, L-BPF) of Fe-Mn-Al-Ni, the potential of high-temperature L-PBF processing was investigated in the present study. The effect of the process parameters on crack formation, grain structure, and phase distribution in the as-built condition, as well as in the course of cyclic heat treatment was examined by microstructural analysis. Optimized processing parameters were applied to fabricate cylindrical samples ...

Fluorescence Microscopy of Superplasticizers in Cementitious Systems: Applications and Challenges
(2020-08-24)
In addition to the desired plasticizing effect, superplasticizers used in high and ultra-high performance concretes (UHPC) influence the chemical system of the pastes and for example retardation of the cement hydration occurs. Thus, superplasticizers have to be chosen wisely for every material composition and application. To investigate the essential adsorption of these polymers to particle surfaces in-situ to overcome several practical challenges of superplasticizer research, fluorescence microscopy is useful. In ...

Pultruded Hybrid Reinforced Compounds with Glass/Cellulose Fibers in a Polybutylene Terephthalate Matrix: Property Investigation
(2022-03-13)
The fiber type, orientation of the fiber, fiber-matrix adhesion, and the fiber length are very important for the performance of a short fiber reinforced plastic. Hybrid reinforced polybutylene terephthalate and reference compounds were tested using tensile, Charpy impact, and three-point bending mechanical tests. The interaction of regenerated cellulose fiber and glass fiber was investigated using a polybutylene terephthalate matrix at a fiber volume content of 10%. The ratios of each fiber type was varied. The ...

Dissolution of Portlandite in Pure Water: Part 1 Molecular Dynamics (MD) Approach
(2022-02-14)
The current contribution proposes a multi-scale bridging modeling approach for the dissolution of crystals to connect the atomistic scale to the (sub-) micro-scale. This is demonstrated in the example of dissolution of portlandite, as a relatively simple benchmarking example for cementitious materials. Moreover, dissolution kinetics is also important for other industrial processes, e.g., acid gas absorption and pH control. In this work, the biased molecular dynamics (metadynamics) coupled with reactive force field ...

Bonding Behaviour of Steel Fibres in UHPFRC Based on Alkali-Activated Slag
(2022-03-04)
The mechanical performance of fibre-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete based on alkali-activated slag was investigated, concentrating on the use of steel fibres. The flexural strength is slightly higher compared to the UHPC based on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) as the binder. Correlating the flexural strength test with multiple fibre-pullout tests, an increase in the bonding behaviour at the interfacial-transition zone of the AAM-UHPC was found compared to the OPC-UHPC. Microstructural investigations on the ...

A Critical Review on the Complex Potentials in Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics
(2022-01-03)
Introducing a crack in an elastic plate is challenging from the mathematical point of view and relevant within an engineering context of evaluating strength and reliability of structures. Accordingly, a multitude of associated works is available to date, emanating from both applied mathematics and mechanics communities. Although considering the same problem, the given complex potentials prove to be different, revealing various inconsistencies in terms of resulting stresses and displacements. Essential information on ...
