Quo Vadis Conferences in the Business and Information Systems Engineering (BISE) Community After Covid
(2021-07-06)
The global Covid-19 pandemic has not only influenced the way we work and collaborate on our research but also how we present and exchange novel contributions at scientific conferences. Governmental lockdowns and (inter)-national travel restrictions have forced conference organizers to move from offline conference venues to virtual platforms quickly. Our discipline, the Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE) community, is an interdisciplinary field involving the more conference-driven computer sciences and ...

Vegetable Crop Biomass Estimation Using Hyperspectral and RGB 3D UAV Data
(2020-10-19)
Remote sensing (RS) has been an e ective tool to monitor agricultural production systems, but for vegetable crops, precision agriculture has received less interest to date. The objective of this study was to test the predictive performance of two types of RS data—crop height information derived from point clouds based on RGB UAV data, and reflectance information from terrestrial hyperspectral imagery—to predict fresh matter yield (FMY) for three vegetable crops (eggplant, tomato, and cabbage). The study was conducted ...

Composite spatial manipulation framework for redirected walking
(2022-10-31)
In this study, we present a composite spatial manipulation framework for the redirected walking technique. The proposed framework focuses on utilizing two different approaches simultaneously to manipulate the user’s position and orientation in the physical space, aiming to substantially improve their redirection in a confined physical space and reduce the special requirements for the RDW technique. Each approach utilizes different perceptual processes. The first is a discrete spatial manipulation approach that ...

Spectral composition of low-coherence interferograms at high numerical apertures
(2019-04-11)
Interference signals in coherence scanning interferometry at high numerical apertures and narrow bandwidth illumination are spectrally broadened. This enables phase analysis within a spectral range much wider than the spectral distribution of the light emitted by the light source. Consequently, different surface features can be resolved depending on the wavelength used for phase analysis of the interference signals.
In addition, the surface topography itself affects the spectral composition of interference signals ...

Model selection, adaptation, and combination for transfer learning in wind and photovoltaic power forecasts
(2023-03-14)
There is recent interest in using model hubs – a collection of pre-trained models – in computer vision tasks. To employ a model hub, we first select a source model and then adapt the model for the target to compensate for differences. There still needs to be more research on model selection and adaption for renewable power forecasts. In particular, none of the related work examines different model selection and adaptation strategies for neural network architectures. Also, none of the current studies investigates the ...

Experimental and numerical polarization analysis of the 3D transfer behavior in microsphere-assisted interferometry for 1D phase gratings
(2023-06-08)
Enhancing the lateral resolution in optical microscopy and interferometry is of great interest in recent research. In order to laterally resolve structures including feature dimensions below the Abbe resolution limit, microspheres in the optical near-field of the specimen are shown to locally improve the resolution of the imaging system. Experimental and simulated results following this approach are obtained by a high NA Linnik interferometer and analyzed in this contribution. They show the reconstructed surface of ...

Legal challenges of an open web index
(2021-03-16)
Calls for a European “third way” in matters of digital technology need to be put into action to achieve an actual change of the status quo. To achieve autonomy in the digital sphere, European alternatives to digital services and products need to be established. However, such efforts must also extend to the level of information technology infrastructure. To that end, decentralized indexing of the internet could significantly help to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty. Nevertheless, legal challenges need to be ...

The role of design patterns in the development and legal assessment of lawful technologies
(2022-10-22)
Novel technologies such as smart personal assistants integrate digital services into everyday life. These services use personal data to offer personalized services. While they are subject to special data protection regulations at the time of development, there are few guidelines describing the transition from legal requirements to implementation. To reduce risks, services depend on external legal assessments. With developers and legal experts often missing either legal or technical knowledge, the challenge lies in ...

Optimised use of data fusion and memory-based learning with an Austrian soil library for predictions with infrared data
(2023-06-24)
Infrared spectroscopy in the visible to near-infrared (vis–NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) regions is a well-established approach for the prediction of soil properties. Different data fusion and training approaches exist, and the optimal procedures are yet undefined and may depend on the heterogeneity present in the set and on the considered scale. The objectives were to test the usefulness of partial least squares regressions (PLSRs) for soil organic carbon (SOC), total carbon (Ct), total nitrogen (Nt) and pH using ...
