Late to the Party—Transferred Mulch from Green Manures Delays Colorado Potato Beetle Infestation in Regenerative Potato Cropping Systems
(2022-12-12)
The Colorado potato beetle (CPB) is an exceptionally challenging potato pest. Some regenerative farmers have reported that the use of transferred green manure mulch can considerably reduce CBP damage. Previous studies confirm this observation, but mainly with straw mulch, which is rarely used in Central Europe, and not embedded in the new regenerative cropping approach. For this, six trials conducted between 2014 and 2019 were evaluated, comparing CPB infestation in potatoes with and without transferred mulch as well ...

Kultur, Soziale Arbeit und Kulturelle Bildung
(2022-12-06)

Farming system effects on root rot pathogen complex and yield of faba bean (vicia faba) in Germany
(2022-12-21)
A survey across Germany was undertaken from 2016-2019 to evaluate effects of management system (organic vs conventional), pedo-climatic conditions and crop rotation history on faba bean root health status, diversity of major root rot pathogens and yield. Root rot incidence was generally low and there was no effect of the management system on the spectrum of pathogens isolated. Among the most common fungal species identified, frequencies of Fusarium redolens and Didymella pinodella were significantly higher in roots ...

Personality traits and meat consumption: the mediating role of animal-related ethical concerns
(2023-01-04)
Prior research suggests that personality traits are associated with meat consumption. However, this association is not uniform across all types of meat. For instance, Big Five personality traits such as openness and agreeableness are negatively associated with red meat consumption but positively associated with fish. Using a large sample of Chilean university students (N = 1,149), we examined whether these differential meat consumption patterns can be explained by an intermediary variable of animal-related ethical ...

Housing in Germany and the Rebirth of the High‐Rise in Post‐Modern Urban Design
(2022-11-22)
High-rise buildings were a frequent design element in modernist urban planning and architecture. However, both the criticisms modernism faced and the negative experiences with large housing estates dating from that period led to post-modern designs that built strongly on traditional pre-modernist urban form. Despite the role of high-rise buildings in office areas, many brownfield and greenfield housing developments from the 1980s to the 2000s reflected this trend and abandoned high-rise buildings almost completely ...

Spatially explicit life cycle assessments reveal hotspots of environmental impacts from renewable electricity generation
(2022-08-30)
Renewable energy generation has great potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, however, it may exacerbate other environmental impacts, such as water scarcity, elsewhere in the supply chain. Here, we reveal a wide range of global environmental impacts of concentrated solar power, run-of-river hydropower, and biomass burning compared to classical coal-fired power: Spatially explicit life cycle impact assessment is used to evaluate their supply chains with respect to demand for energy, land, material, and water, ...

Investigating the Effect of Different Drying Strategies on the Quality Parameters of Daucus carota L. Using Dynamic Process Control and Measurement Techniques
(2021-03-21)
The present work aims to improve the understanding of the effect of different drying strategies at varying temperatures on the dynamic drying behaviour and quality of organic products such as carrots using non-invasive measurement techniques. For this purpose, carrot slices of 3 mm thickness were dried under three different strategies namely air temperature controlled (A), product temperature controlled (P) and stepwise temperature controlled (S) at different temperatures (50 °C, 60 °C and 70 °C) to measure and analyse ...

The Whole and the Parts—A New Perspective on Production Diseases and Economic Sustainability in Dairy Farming
(2021-08-12)
The levels of production diseases (PD) and the cow replacement rate are high in dairy farming. They indicate excessive production demands on the cow and a poor state of animal welfare. This is the subject of increasing public debate. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of production diseases on the economic sustainability of dairy farms. The contributions of individual culled cows to the farm’s economic performance were calculated, based on milk recording and accounting data from 32 farms in Germany. ...

How political philosophies can help to discuss and differentiate theories in community ecology
(2021-04-09)
This paper uses structural analogies to competing political philosophies of human society as a heuristic tool to differentiate between ecological theories and to bring out new aspects of apparently well-known classics of ecological scholarship. These two different areas of knowledge have in common that their objects are ‘societies’, i.e. units composed of individuals, and that contradictory and competing theories about these supra-individual units exist. The benefit of discussing ecological theories in terms of their ...

Facilitating business model innovation: The influence of sustainability and the mediating role of strategic orientations
(2021-01-04)
Businesses increasingly incorporate the sustainability aspects into their products, services, and processes that drive innovation. While extant research on the linkage between sustainability and innovation has gained momentum over the past years, prior research has predominantly focused on sustainability's performance impacts (e.g., financially and environmentally) and product innovation outputs, neglecting the internal mechanisms that leverage sustainability. While findings from previous studies suggest that ...
