Far-Right Local Governments and Civil Society: Findings from France and Italy
(2022-03-02)
The rise of far-right parties across Europe and their entrance into government at the local, if not regional or national, levels pose challenges for established civil society actors. This article draws on early findings from an ongoing research project in order to present two case studies of far-right local governments in small industrial towns in France and Italy: Hayange and Sant’Agata Bolognese. Keying in on these local administrations’ approaches to civil society and drawing on semi-structured interviews with ...

Spectres of European money and Stefan Eich’s Currency of Politics
(2024-01-10)
This paper aims at discussing the historical trajectory of European money and the way it can be illuminated through a dialogue with Stefan Eich’s The Currency of Politics. Fleshing out the different theories, visions, and conceptualisations of money in Eich’s book, this paper utilises this exposition to evaluate the development and operationalisation of European money. With an eye to contemporary debates about the re-politicisation or democratisation of money, the paper will critically assess the way in which Eich’s ...

Empirical research on polycentric governance: Critical gaps and a framework for studying long-term change
(2023-11-08)
Polycentric governance (PG) describes governance systems characterized by multiple, interdependent centers of decision-making, offering an alternative to centralized governance models. PG is often assumed to be effective at helping policy actors address complex collective action problems, but burgeoning empirical literature on PG shows that it is not a panacea – PG is associated with both positive and negative governance outcomes. In this article, we ask: what do we know about why PG performs well in some cases but ...

The political: A view from Jakarta's kampungs
(2024-04-26)
This article is a response to Leitner and Sheppard’s recent publications on Jakarta. I argue that Jakarta’s kampungs and the eviction of their communities is a topic that needs to be situated in the realm of social reproduction. The multidimensional problems in kampungs fall within capitalism’s wider ‘crisis of care’. From this methodological position, we can access the political domain of the kampung, from which a new political agency emerges as collective bodies beyond merely the sum of individual survival tactics.

Interrupting the neoliberal masculine state machinery? Strategic selectivities and municipalist practice in Barcelona and Zagreb
(2022-07-07)
All municipalist initiatives are confronted with what Marx called the ‘state machinery’: an ensemble of apparatuses protecting the status quo of capitalist accumulation. It is difficult for municipalist movements to sustain their momentum of storming the city halls in the face of this reality. Looking at Barcelona En Comú (Barcelona in Common) and Zagreb Je NAŠ! (Zagreb Is Ours!), the article discusses what experiences municipalist actors gain when inspecting the state machinery close up. We identify the traces they ...

Saudi Arabian strategy reassessment since 2003: The emergence of a regional leadership via Neoclassical Realist lenses
(2023-06-12)
This article argues that the well-discussed international behaviour change in Saudi Arabia, rather than being a consequence of the so-called Arab Spring, resulted from a grand strategy reassessment in the early 2000s. Grand strategy concerns how states assess the geostrategic environment, plan resource allocation and prioritize policy to meet national interests. Since the 1970s, Riyadh judged its geopolitical vulnerabilities concerning Iran and Iraq realistically, supporting the least threatening actor from the two ...

Best, Heinrich/Higley, John (Hrsg.): The Palgrave Handbook of Political Elites, 698 S., Palgrave Macmillan, London 2018.
(2020-01-16)
