Mapping redistribution in terms of family: A European comparison
(2023-04-24)
Redistribution is one of the fundamental characteristics of developed societies. While societal redistribution between working and non-working citizens has been studied intensively, redistribution in terms of family has been analysed mainly as private redistribution. In this contribution, we study societal redistribution in terms of family by systematically analysing its regulation and simulating its results. We map family-related redistribution in Europe by analysing to whom financial resources are granted (benefits) ...

Wer leidet in der Sozialen Arbeit an Erschöpfung? Ergebnisse einer Repräsentativerhebung
(2023-06-05)

Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, innerhalb der Sozialen Arbeit gefährdete Personengruppen unter Berücksichtigung von berufsspezifischen Einflussfaktoren ...

Interrupting the neoliberal masculine state machinery? Strategic selectivities and municipalist practice in Barcelona and Zagreb
(2022-07-07)
All municipalist initiatives are confronted with what Marx called the ‘state machinery’: an ensemble of apparatuses protecting the status quo of capitalist accumulation. It is difficult for municipalist movements to sustain their momentum of storming the city halls in the face of this reality. Looking at Barcelona En Comú (Barcelona in Common) and Zagreb Je NAŠ! (Zagreb Is Ours!), the article discusses what experiences municipalist actors gain when inspecting the state machinery close up. We identify the traces they ...

Get the happiness out–An online experiment on the causal effects of positive emotions on giving
(2023-08-23)
Our study provides new evidence on the impact of positive emotions on voluntary contributions to public goods in a natural setting. Using a lab-in-field experiment, we induce positive incidental emotions randomly and analyze their effects on donations using a dictator game with multiple beneficiaries. Although we find no significant overall effect of positive incidental emotions on donation levels, our results show a significant shift in the allocation of donations towards the host charity. These findings shed light ...

Agrarian change through speculation: Rural elites as land brokers for mining in Colombia
(2023-08-31)
This paper studies the connections between the expansion of mining capital, speculative forms of land grabbing and agrarian transformation. It is argued that in periods of commodity boom, the landowning rural elite benefits from mining through speculative land deals with mining companies. They act as ‘land brokers’ for the mining firms, helping them to overcome a significant barrier to land accumulation through the de facto abolition of landed property. The analysis is based on a qualitative case study on the expansion ...

Saudi Arabian strategy reassessment since 2003: The emergence of a regional leadership via Neoclassical Realist lenses
(2023-06-12)
This article argues that the well-discussed international behaviour change in Saudi Arabia, rather than being a consequence of the so-called Arab Spring, resulted from a grand strategy reassessment in the early 2000s. Grand strategy concerns how states assess the geostrategic environment, plan resource allocation and prioritize policy to meet national interests. Since the 1970s, Riyadh judged its geopolitical vulnerabilities concerning Iran and Iraq realistically, supporting the least threatening actor from the two ...

Mental health and stress level of Ukrainians seeking psychological help online
(2023-11-04)
Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, more than 8 million Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes. Ukrainians exposed to armed conflict and migration are likely to have low levels of mental health status and seek help. We provide a uniform quantitative assessment of the mental health conditions of Ukrainians seeking help soon after the invasion and resettlement. We screen the mental well-being and psychological distress of 1165 refugees, migrants, internally displaced, and non-displaced ...

Adaption of the meat attachment scale (MEAS) to Germany: interplay with food neophobia, preference for organic foods, social trust and trust in food technology innovations
(2023-09-19)
Meat-based diets are still the norm, and vegans and vegetarians represent only a small minority of the population. A transition, respectively, behavioural change towards a diet with less meat can only occur by adopting a positive attitude towards dietary changes based on reasons and motivations. The main aim of this study is to apply the meat attachment scale (MEAS) in Germany in order to analyse if this construct is a barrier towards a diet with less meat in this country. For this purpose, the impact of meat attachment ...

Medicalizing disabled people’s emotions - Symptom of a dis/ableist society
(2023-12-11)
The theoretical - conceptual article at hand explores how emotional discourses shape social relations by specifically focusing on the medicalization of disabled - and chronically ill - people's emotions. Medicalization is a concept from medical sociology that describes medicine's expansion into non-medical life areas, for instance into the realm of emotions, sometimes in order to challenge this expansion. The emotions of disabled people are often presented as a medicalized problem, rather than recognizing their ...

Ein übersehenes Märchen von Dorothea Viehmann
(2023-11-14)
Although the Brothers Grimm give a different indication of origin for the fairy tale Die weiße und die schwarze Braut (KHM 135), the correspondence of characteristic linguistic phenomena with the fairy tales of Dorothea Viehmann suggests that this tale could also have been contributed by her. With the help of the “original version” from the Berlin Grimm estate, a wealth of further linguistic-stylistic and lexical-motif evidence is presented that corroborates this attribution. Considerations of the history of transmission, ...
