(Eine Untersuchung des Freiheitsstiftenden Moments in Mertons wissenschaftlichem Ethos)
Abstract
Robert King Merton manifestierte Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit seinem wissenschaftlichen Ethos eine Idee von guter Wissenschaft und wie diese zu betreiben sei. Die vorliegende Ausarbeitung befasst sich mit eben jenem Ethos und der Frage nach dessen Eignung als Koordinator der wissenschaftlichen Praxis. Dabei wurde der Fokus auf Folgen gelegt, die der Einhaltung der normativen Imperative inhärent sind. Anhand dessen kristallisierte sich der Effekt des Zuwachses an Freiheit heraus. Unter Hinzunahme der erkenntnistheoretischen Freiheitsbegründung von Thorsten Wilholt konnte das konkrete, freiheitsstiftende Moment in Mertons wissenschaftlichem Ethos auf die Bereiche Freiheit der Mittel und der Methode reduziert werden. Abschließend wurde anhand der Studie von Macfarlane und Cheng die Aktualität des Ethos im Wissenschaftssystem betrachtet. Es zeigt sich, dass in der wissenschaftlichen Praxis nicht nach dem Ideal von Mertons wissenschaftlichem Ethos, das als utopischer Vorläufer der DFG „Vorschläge zur Sicherung guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis“ verstanden wurde, gehandelt wird. Trotz der aufgezeigten Notwendigkeit von Freiheit und der Möglichkeit, diese mithilfe des Ethos zu erreichen, scheint im Wissenschaftssystem eine Orientierung an alternativen Normen stattzufinden.
