Erzeugung remanent stabiler Domänenmuster in austauschverschobenen Dünnschichtsystemen mittels Heliumionenmikroskopie
Abstract
Artificial magnetic domain patterns in exchange bias (EB) thin film systems gathered growing importance for their application as a source of magnetic stray field landscapes through the last years. Such domain structures serve as substrate for the transport of superparamagnetic beads for bio medical and microfluidic sensor applications. EB-layer systems consist of a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic layer coupled to each other causing special magnetic properties. Helium ion bombardment turned out to be a sufficient tool to tailor these properties, e.g. for the fabrication of artificial magnetic domain patterns. In this work, the application of a helium ion microscope (HIM) for a local direct writing modification of EB-systems was tested for the first time. For this purpose the properties of a prototypical polycrystalline EB-system were analyzed and specifically modified to quantify their influence on the magnetic behavior of the EB-system. Especially the grain size distribution, the impact of an applied magnetic field during sample fabrication on the unidirectional anisotropy and the ion dose dependency of the remagnetization behavior were analyzed. Based on these experiments, the minimal domain size of one- and two-dimensionally confined domain patterns at room temperature was detected with respect to the domain geometry and size. Additionally, the influence of the angle between domain wall and domain magnetization was taken into account. In order to do this, domain patterns with different geometry and size have been produced by magnetic patterning with HIM and, subsequently, analyzed by complementary measurement methods, namely magnetic force microscopy, Kerr microscopy, resonant X-ray photo emission electron microscopy and Kerr magnetometry. It is shown that the domain size as well as the domain geometry influences the domain walls’ properties leading to altered minimal domain sizes. Based on these experiments, HIM was used for the first time to fabricate periodic magnetic domain patterns with a global sense of rotation in a multiple stepwise patterning process. The magnetic properties of these domain patterns were investigated by the aforementioned measurement methods with the main focus on magnetization distribution and domain wall charge. The findings have been correlated to the results of the preparatory experiments.
