Unveiling the components of the signaling pathway between endosomes and the phagocytic uptake machinery in Dictyostelium discoideum
(2011-01-19)
The soil amoebae Dictyostelium discoideum take up particles from their environment in order to obtain nutrition. The particle transits through the cell within a phagosome that fuses with organelles of different molecular compositions, undergoing a gradual degradation by different sets of hydrolytic enzymes.
Griffiths’ concept of “phagosome individuality” predicts signaling from phagosomes into the cytoplasm, which might regulate many aspects of cell physiology. The finding that Dictyostelium cells depleted of the ...

Dynamic characterization of olfactory receptors in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster
(2011-08-22)
Temporal changes in odor concentration are vitally important to many animals orienting and navigating in their environment. How are such temporal changes detected? Within the scope of the present work an accurate stimulation and analysis system was developed to examine the dynamics of physiological properties of Drosophila melanogaster olfactory receptor organs. Subsequently a new method for delivering odor stimuli was tested and used to present the first dynamic characterization of olfactory receptors at the level ...

Kompetenzen naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisgewinnung
(2011-04-15)

Labelling schemes for organic food: Consumer attitudes, preferences and willingness-to-pay in six European countries
(2011-12-12)
Since July 2010, all pre-packed organic food produced in the European Union (EU) must carry the new mandatory EU logo for organic food. Voluntary organic labels (such as national governmental logos and logos of private farmers’ associations and control bodies) can still be used, but only in addition to the mandatory EU logo. This change in the regulatory environment of organic labelling raises a number of questions regarding consumer preferences for different kinds of organic certification logos, which the present ...

Neue Ansätze für die ökologische Milchrinderzucht
(2011-05-16)

Impact of sward type, cutting date and conditioning temperature on mass and energy flows in the integrated generation of solid fuel and biogas from semi-natural grassland
(2011-01-21)
Energy production from biomass and the conservation of ecologically valuable grassland habitats are two important issues of agriculture today. The combination of a bioenergy production, which minimises environmental impacts and competition with food production for land with a conversion of semi-natural grasslands through new utilization alternatives for the biomass, led to the development of the IFBB process. Its basic principle is the separation of biomass into a liquid fraction (press fluid, PF) for the production ...

Agri-environmental evaluation of traditional and alternative corn production systems in Chiapas, Mexico
(Kassel University Press, 2011)
This study evaluates the effects of environmental variables on traditional and alternative agroecosystems in three Ejidos (communal lands) in the Chiapas rainforest in Mexico. The tests occurred within two seasonal agricultural cycles. In spring-summer, experiments were performed with the traditional slash, fell and burn (S-F-B) system, no-burn systems and rotating systems with Mucuna deeringiana Bort., and in the autumn-winter agricultural cycle, three no-burn systems were compared to evaluate the effect of alternative ...

Soil fertility and nutrient status of traditional Gayo coffee agroforestry systems in the Takengon region, Aceh Province, Indonesia
(Kassel University Press, 2011)
Little is known about the traditional coffee cultivation systems in Central Aceh, Indonesia, where coffee production is a major source of income for local Gayo people. Based on field observations and farmer interviews, 14 representative agroforestry coffee plantations of different age classes (60-70 years, 30-40 years, and 20 years) as well as seven adjacent grassland and native forest sites were selected for this study, and soil and coffee leaf samples collected for nutrient analysis. Significant differences in soil ...

Domestic policy responses to the food price crisis: The case of Bolivia
(Kassel University Press, 2011)
In face of the global food crisis of 2007-2008, severe concerns arose about how developing countries would be affected by the extreme short-term fluctuations in international commodity prices. We examine the effects of the crisis on Bolivia, one of the poorest countries of the Americas. We focus on the effectiveness of the domestic policy interventions in preventing spillovers of the development of international food prices to domestic markets. Using a cointegration model, we study price interdependencies of wheat ...
