Leveraging Biodiversity Action From Plural Values: Transformations of Governance Systems
(2021-06-04)
In this paper, we argue that leveraging plural values into action for biodiversity requires a focus on transforming the biodiversity governance system. We draw on Donella Meadows’ concept of Leverage Points, which outlines the “depth” of intervention in order to shift a system toward sustainability. Engaging with deep leverage points (system intent and goals) is argued to lead to greater transformation than engaging with shallow leverage points (system design and materials). We outline how embracing plural values of ...

Scaling the impact of sustainability initiatives: a typology of amplification processes
(2020-05-14)
Amplifying the impact of sustainability initiatives to foster transformations in urban and rural contexts, has received increasing attention in resilience, social innovation, and sustainability transitions research. We review the literature on amplification frameworks and propose an integrative typology of eight processes, which aim to increase the impact of such initiatives. The eight amplification processes are: stabilizing, speeding up, growing, replicating, transferring, spreading, scaling up, and scaling deep. ...

Engaging diverse experts in the global science-policy interface: Learning experiences from the process of the IPBES Values Assessment
(2023-06-30)
This longitudinal study explores evidence of learning and reflexivity among experts involved in the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Values Assessment from 2018 to 2022. As part of an online survey administered at yearly intervals, experts self-reported their views on: i) the aims they attributed to the Values Assessment, ii) their epistemic worldviews, iii) the definition of the multiple values of nature, and iv) their personal learning experiences in the ...

Joining of Contact Pins and Conductive Compounds via Injection Molding – Influence of the Flow Situation on the Electrical Contact Resistance
(2020-04-09)
While a lot of research can be found in the field of bulk resistance of carbon filled polymers, comparatively few papers focus on contact resistance between compound and metal contacts. Due to that small number of researches that deal with contact resistances, studies of the influence of injection molding conditions and parameters on the contact resistance are also very rare. In contradiction to that, these influences on bulk resistance have been studied. The objective of this work was to investigate the electrical ...

Effects of aging on the stress-induced martensitic transformation and cyclic superelastic properties in Co-Ni-Ga shape memory alloy single crystals under compression
(2022)
Co-Ni-Ga shape memory alloys attracted scientific attention as promising candidate materials for damping applications at elevated temperatures, owing to excellent superelastic properties featuring a fully reversible stress-strain response up to temperatures as high as 500 °C. In the present work, the effect of aging treatments conducted in a wide range of aging temperatures and times, i.e. at 300–400 °C for 0.25–8.5 h, was investigated. It is shown that critical features of the martensitic transformation are strongly ...

Microstructure of an additively manufactured Ti-Ta-Al alloy using novel pre-alloyed powder feedstock material
(2023-05-01)
Binary Ti-Ta and ternary Ti-Ta-Al alloys attracted considerable attention as new potential biomaterials and/or high-temperature shape memory alloys. However, conventional forming and manufacturing technologies of refractory based titanium alloys are difficult and cost-intensive, especially when complex shapes are required. Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) emerged as a suitable alternative and several studies exploited elemental powder mixing approaches to obtain a desired alloy and subsequently use it for complex ...

Making transdisciplinarity happen: Phase 0, or before the beginning
(2022-06-21)
Both within science and society, transdisciplinary approaches are increasingly employed to address today’s sustainability challenges. Often transdisciplinary research processes are structured in three core phases: a) problem identification and formation of a common research object; b) co-production of solution-oriented and transferable knowledge; c) embedding co-produced knowledge through transdisciplinary reintegration. In all phases of this ideal-typical model, the involvement of non-academic actors is essential ...

Bridge over troubled water: managing compatibility and conflict among thought collectives in sustainability science
(2021-12-01)
Sustainability transformations call forth new forms and systems of knowledge across society. However, few tools and processes exist for promoting dialogue among different interests and normative stances in knowledge co-creation. In this article, we build on the notion of thought collectives to argue that understanding and moderating normative tensions are necessary if sustainability science is to provide successful solutions. Drawing on an analysis of the normative tensions between rival high-tech and low-tech thought ...

Using Moringa Oleifera Seed Cake and Compost as Organic Soil Amendments for Sustainable Agriculture in Valencia Orange Orchard
(2021-09-24)
This work was conducted during two consecutive seasons of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 at the Experimental Research Station of National Research Centre at Nubaria, El Behiera governorate, Egypt. Twelve year old Valencia orange trees (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) budded on Volkamer lemon rootstock, grown in sandy soil under drip irrigation system as plant materials to study the effect of six organic soil amendment treatments on soil hydrophysical properties, soil water retention, soil water movement, plant nutrient contents, ...

Food Enhancers Usage in Home Food Preparation among the Young Working Women in Malaysia: A Qualitative Study
(2021-11-29)
This paper explores the usage of food enhancers in food preparation among young working women in Malaysia. In this qualitative study, the study informants were drafted using purposive snowball strategy to take part in a semi-structured interview. The data were recorded and analysed accordingly to the research aims. Majority of the informants claimed that they used food enhancer to enhance the flavour and taste of the food while reducing cooking time, minimise preparation processes and time spent in the kitchen. As ...
