Human-Animal Relationship in Dairy Farming: Evaluation of measures for on-farm application and investigation of influences on cows´ behaviour towards humans
(2018-04-23)
The objective of the present thesis was (1) to evaluate measures of the human-animal relationship (HAR) in dairy cows regarding their reliability, validity and practical applicability in animal welfare science and breeding. (2) Moreover, important human and farm influences on the cows´ behaviour towards humans in the barn and in the milking parlour should be identified via a cross-sectional investigation.
In the pilot phase, four behavioural measures applied in the barn have been identified as practical and reliable ...

Sustainable Water Resource Management for a Safe Food System in Georgia: A study of Water Quality Governance, focusing the Mashavera River Basin
(2018-09-25)
From 2015 to 2018, a collaborative research project between the School of Agricultural and Natural Science, Agricultural University of Georgia and the Department of Organic Food Quality and Food Culture, University of Kassel, Germany, was carried out to investigate the multiple impacts of water quality on food security and water quality management issues in Mashavera River Basin. The environmental pollution in the Mashavera River Basin is a key hotspot in Georgia. There are competing interests in the River Basin. The ...

Effects of irrigation water quality on soil properties and crops in urban gardens of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
(2018-02-15)
Urban food production is an important supplier of fresh produce in the rapidly growing West African cities. In year-round vegetable production of the semi-arid tropics, low quality water is often use for irrigation. This results in health risks for producers and consumers, and causes environmental pollution, followed by soil contamination and crop yield reduction. In the presented PhD thesis quality and effects of irrigation water in urban vegetable gardens of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, were examined. The aim of these ...

Isolation and characterisation of novel nematophagous fungi from eggs of the cereal cyst nematode Heterodera filipjevi and identifying their secondary metabolites with nematicidal activity
(2018-06-11)
Parasitism caused by cereal cyst nematodes (CCNs) is a major limiting biotic factor in cereal cropping systems. CCNs attack cereal crops and can lead to significant yield reductions. Field observations in experimental wheat fields of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) in Turkey had revealed a sharp decline in nematode populations of the cereal cyst nematode Heterodera filipjevi. Microscopic studies of the cyst samples obtained from these fields regularly demonstrated the presence of fungi ...

Etiology of Maize Root rot in Oman: Causal agents and effects of a compost based organic growing system
(2018-08-16)
Summary:
In Oman, the main cereal crop Maize is facing serious problems due to high salinity, alkaline soils with low organic matter, high temperatures, and root rot diseases. Production peaked at 40,000 t in 2011 but dropped to less than 15,000 t in 2014.
A survey on maize root rot in eight maize growing governorates in Oman yielded nine fungal and oomycetes species of which Pythium arrhenomanes and Fusarium fujikuroi were first reports on maize in Oman. Both are able to attack multiple hosts. Under controlled ...

Effects of grassland management intensification on dynamics of soil organic carbon and nitrogen in temperate grassland soils
(2018-05-09)
In Germany, about one third of the agricultural area is managed as permanent grassland. The predominant use of permanent grassland in Germany is mostly the production of fodder for meat or milk production, achieved by grazing or mowing. In addition, an increased demand for biomass to produce renewable energy has influenced grassland management in the last decade. Until 2013, a continuous decrease in grassland due to grassland conversion was recorded (from 2003 to 2013, by a total of about 5 %). The reduction in ...

Agrobiodiversity and nutrition in traditional cropping systems
(2018-09-03)
In Uganda many farmer households have diverse agroforestry systems known as homegardens, which have been adapted over generations to supply a year-round harvest of nutritious foods. The work presented in this dissertation sought to identify the factors that influence the agrobiodiversity of these homegardens and to assess the effects of that agrobiodiversity on the health of the households that keep them. Households (n=102) were identified via stratified, random selection across three distinct regional ecological ...

An actor-oriented approach to analyze post-harvest losses : reducing economic loss in pastoral sheep and goat supply chains from northern Kenya
(2018-08-16)
