Concept for selecting and integrating traceability systems in the continuous improvement process of SMEs
(2019)
Industry 4.0 is characterized by digitization, globalized markets and a growing demand for individualized products. Therefore, the success of manufacturing companies heavily relies on innovative and customer driven products. However, the industrializing phase of such products is often characterized by the occurring of errors originating in a lack of experience. If errors are not detected prior to delivery, costs will increase considerably (e.g. expensive product recalls). Traceability systems can clearly identify the ...

Quality Improvement In Manual Assembly By Software-Based Evaluation Of Human Misconduct
(European Safety and Reliability Association, 2019)
For reaching a level of high quality, production processes must be carried out both, economically and reliably. Despite automation and digitalization, manual assembly operations still constitute a key element for creating efficient production processes. However, in practice, creating robust and efficient manual assembly processes often fails because the occurrence of human errors cannot be quantified prospectively. Therefore, a corresponding procedure has been developed at the institutes of the authors. The module-based ...

Weight reduction of DC/DC converters using controllable inductors
(VDE Verlag, 2019-07)
Controllable inductors can be realized by introducing auxiliary windings into the device that partially saturate the core and allow variation of the inductance value. This can be used to achieve zero-voltage switching in a DC/DC converter over a wide load range while at the same time the weight of the inductor is reduced. In this paper the possible size and weight reduction and the influence on the efficiency is calculated and compared to other solutions. The results are verified in a prototype.

Alexa, Can You Help Us Solve This Problem? How Conversations With Smart Personal Assistant Tutors Increase Task Group Outcomes
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2019)
Despite a growing body of research about the design and use of Smart Personal Assistants, existing work has mainly focused on their use as task support for individual users in rather simple problem scenarios. Less is known about their ability to improve collaboration among multiple users in more complex problem settings. In our study, we directly compare 21 groups who either use a Smart Personal Assistant tutor or a human tutor when solving a problem task. The results indicate that groups interacting with Smart ...

Insights into Using IT-Based Peer Feedback to Practice the Students Providing Feedback Skill
(University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hamilton Library, ScholarSpace, 2019)
The skills students need nowadays have changed over the last decades. The required skills are shifting more and more towards higher order thinking skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration and communication. One of the main ways of practicing these skills is through formative feedback, which consists of self-assessment and peer-assessment in our setting.
However, today’s lecturers are facing the challenge that the number of students per lecture is continuously increasing, while the available budget is stagnating. ...
