Model Calculations and Implementation of Filters and Hybrid Green VCSELs based on Optical Thin Film Stacks
(2010-06-25)
This work introduced the novel conception of complex coupled hybrid VCSELs for the first time. Alternating organic and inorganic layers in the lasers provide periodic variation of refractive index and optical gain, which enable single mode operation and low threshold of the VCSELs. Model calculations revealed great reduction of the lasing threshold with factors over 30, in comparison with the existing micro-cavity lasers. Tunable green VCSEL has been also designed, implemented and analyzed taking advantage of the ...

Untersuchungen zu Fabry-Pérot Filterfeldern: Herstellung mittels Nanoimprinttechnologie, experimentelle Charakterisierung und Anwendungen
(2010-08-09)

Patent DE10 2004 037 519 B4 “Sensor Process and Device for Determining a Physical Value“. A Proof of Concept
(2010-06-11)
At present, a fraction of 0.1 - 0.2% of the patients undergoing surgery become aware during the process. The situation is referred to as anesthesia awareness and is obviously very traumatic for the person experiencing it. The reason for its occurrence is mostly an insufficient dosage of the narcotic Propofol combined with the incapability of the technology monitoring the depth of the patient’s anesthetic state to notice the patient becoming aware.
A solution can be a highly sensitive and selective real time monitoring ...

Chemical gas sensors based on functionalized self-actuated piezo-resistive cantilevers
(2009-01-21)

Micro-electromechanical structural design and optimization of vertical cavity photonic devices with wide continuous tuning
(2005-03-11)

Development of hybrid UV VCSEL with organic active material and dielectric DBR mirrors for medical, sensoric and data storage applications
(2009-10-19)
Lasers play an important role for medical, sensoric and data storage devices. This thesis is focused on design, technology development, fabrication and characterization of hybrid ultraviolet Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (UV VCSEL) with organic laser-active material and inorganic distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR).
Multilayer structures with different layer thicknesses, refractive indices and absorption coefficients of the inorganic materials were studied using theoretical model calculations. During the ...

Development of RF MEMS for Innovative Applications in Microwave Systems
(2018-05-28)
Utilization of RF MEMS tunable capacitors in microwave circuits is rapidly growing up. A low cost and simple production of an RF MEMS tunable capacitor is increasingly demanded. Within this work an RF MEMS tunable capacitor structure with low cost materials and process is successfully developed and characterized. A new process with reduced production time and a less number of fabrication steps by incorporating isolating dielectric materials as part of the top membrane in the RF MEMS capacitor structure is presented. ...

Supporting Researchers: Analyzing the Scholarly Publication Life Cycle and Social Bookmarking Systems
(2017-04-19)
Researchers must face the exponential growth of the body of available scholarly literature, which makes it ever harder to keep track with one’s own community, especially for newcomers. In this thesis, we explore different means of supporting researchers with that task. For this purpose, we follow two approaches: We provide analyses of research communities and of researchers’ interactions through data that can be obtained from the phases in the life cycle of scholarly publications (creation, dissemination, usage, and ...

Modelling and simulation of a photovoltaic fuel cell hybrid system
(2005-05-24)
A stand-alone power system is an autonomous system that supplies electricity to the user load without being connected to the electric grid. This kind of decentralized system is frequently located in remote and inaccessible areas. It is essential for about one third of the world population which are living in developed or isolated regions and have no access to an electricity utility grid. The most people live in remote and rural areas, with low population density, lacking even the basic infrastructure. The utility ...
