A Framework for TEI-Based Scholarly Text Editions
(2010-11-15)
In this paper, we describe an interdisciplinary project in which visualization techniques were developed for and applied to scholarly work from literary studies. The aim was to bring Christof Schöch's electronic edition of Bérardier de Bataut's Essai sur le récit (1776) to the web. This edition is based on the Text Encoding Initiative's XML-based encoding scheme (TEI P5, subset TEI-Lite). This now de facto standard applies to machine-readable texts used chiefly in the humanities and social sciences. The intention of ...

Gone with the internet - How the old education was lost
(2015-04-08)
Despite its young history, Computer Science Education has seen a number of "revolutions". Being a
veteran in the field, the author reflects on the many changes he has seen in computing and its teaching.
The intent of this personal collection is to point out that most revolutions came unforeseen and that
many of the new learning initiatives, despite high financial input, ultimately failed.
The author then considers the current revolution (MOOC, inverted lectures, peer instruction, game
design) and, based on the ...

Multi-Frequency Microwave Radiometer for Medical Thermography
(2019-09)
Microwave radiometer systems are an entirely non-invasive, non-toxic, avoiding ionizing radiation, and relatively inexpensive detecting modality. The microwave radiometry technique is based on the measurement of natural electromagnetic noise signals emitted by lossy materials. In medicine, microwave radiometry technique offers a non-invasive thermometry method having the potential advantages of monitoring and producing a full map of the temperature deeply inside the human tissues. The method of diagnosing procedures ...

Beitrag zur Betrachtung des Einflusses der Anforderungen auf die Hazard-Rate unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Zusammenhangs zwischen Anforderungsrate, Ausfallrate, Probability of Dangerous Failure on Demand, Probability of Dangerous Failure per Hour und Hazard-Rate
(2015)

Discovering Knowledge in Bipartite Graphs with Formal Concept Analysis
(2019)
Since the 1970s knowledge based approaches are a crucial part of artificial intelligence (AI) research. In this work we investigate data sets in the form of bipartite graphs, i.e., graphs where a bipartition of the vertex set respecting the edge set can be found, for knowledge. To this end we first relate those bipartite graphs to the structure formal context, as used in formal concept analysis (FCA). This link enables us to employ the whole tool-set of FCA to bipartite graphs and therefore, notably, to bipartite ...

Optimization of the Mechanical and Optical Properties of Tunable Optical Sensor Arrays (TOSA) for a Nanospectrometer in the Visible and Near Infrared Spectral Range
(2015-01-07)
Tunable Optical Sensor Arrays (TOSA) based on Fabry-Pérot (FP) filters, for high quality spectroscopic applications in the visible and near infrared spectral range are investigated within this work. The optical performance of the FP filters is improved by using ion beam sputtered niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBRs) as mirrors. Due to their high refractive index contrast, only a few alternating pairs of Nb2O5 and SiO2 films can achieve DBRs with high reflectivity ...

Electromagnetic Modeling of Nanooptical 2-D Photonic Crystal Structures in Resonant Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems: Polarization Selectivity and Tunability
(2018-08-27)
In this thesis, optical filters and cavities consisting of 2-D Photonic Crystals (PCs) are studied in the Near-Infrared (NIR) range with regard to their optical properties using
the frequency domain 3-D Finite Element Method (FEM). The filter structures are Photonic Crystal Membranes (PCMs) and micromechanically tunable Fabry-Pérot-Filters
(FPFs) with periodically arranged Indium Phosphide (InP)/air elements, which support Guided Resonances (GRs). The focus here is primarily on the polarization selectivity. In

Development and assessment of volume resolving velocimetry for turbomachinery test facilities
(Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt DLR, 2017-12-21)
The present thesis assesses the applicability of volume resolving velocimetry
for turbo machinery test facilities. Tomographic particle image velocimetry has been implemented in a transonic cascade wind tunnel. Assessment is based on 3D-3C measurements of the passage vortex in an axial compressor cascade at subsonic inflow (Ma1=0.6). Results show broad consistency with stereoscopic PIV with improved depth resolution. A novel Fast Multiplicative Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (FMART) enables signi cantly faster ...
