Africa’s future: Demarginalizing urban agriculture in the era of climate change
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-06-05)
Africans are migrating to cities. With the continent’s cities projected to double in population by 2050, the issue of food insecurity in urban areas is increasingly becoming a major concern. To sustain this urban explosion, the question of how to maintain constant food supply to urban residents remains an urgent priority since these locations do not always get access to adequate food. There has, however, been little work on examining urban agriculture (UA) as an alternative means of reducing hunger in Africa, especially ...

Dietary habits and nutritional status among school children in rural and urban areas: A comparative study from Bogor, Indonesia
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-12-26)
When Indonesia was combating child undernutrition, overnutrition emerged which made the situation more complex. In fact, dwelling area like rural versus urban is one of the direct determi- nants which play a big role in shaping dietary habits and nutritional status in population. However, there is a lack of data that shows dieteray habits between urban and rural areas in Indonesia. This study aims to compare the dietary habits and nutritional status between children living in urban and rural areas in Bogor. This study ...

Use of organic wastes of Agave processing for bioenergy production
(2018)

In the search for low-cost year-round feeds: Pen-level growth performance of local and crossbred Ugandan pigs fed forage- or silage-based diets versus commercial diet
(Kassel University Press, 2018-12-04)
Smallholder pig farmers in East Africa report that lack of feed, seasonal feed shortages, quality and cost are key constraints to pig rearing. Commercially prepared pig diets are too expensive and people and pigs compete for food. Smallholder farmers typically feed nutritionally unbalanced diets, resulting in low average daily gain (ADG) and poor farmer profits. Our objective was to compare the ADG of Ugandan pigs fed forage- or silage-based or commercial diets. Ugandan weaner-grower pigs were randomly assigned to ...

A Paradigm Shift in Water Quality Governance in a Transitional Context: A Critical Study about the Empowerment of Local Governance in Georgia
(2018-01-01)
The management of water quality is an important part of natural resource governance. Assurance of water quality therefore requires formulation of the regulatory framework and institutional process. Water quality-related problems and their management are mainly recognized as local responsibilities in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The politics of environmental policy-making should consider the political economic dynamics and socio-ecological patterns. Decentralization by providing more power to the local ...

Nutrition Transition and Traditional Food Cultural Changes in Sri Lanka during Colonization and Post-Colonization
(2018-07-13)
Sri Lanka was a colony of the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The simplification of Sri Lankan food culture can be seen most clearly today, including how the diet has been changed in the last 400 years since the colonial occupation began. Therefore, greater efforts must be made to uncover the colonial forces that have undermined food security and health in Sri Lanka. Also traditional eating habits, which are associated with countless health benefits, have been gradually replaced by the globalized food system of ...

The relevance of herders’ local ecological knowledge on coping with livestock losses during harsh winters in western Mongolia
(2018-01-29)
In many regions of the world, traditional and local ecological knowledge is still important today for coping with environmental challenges. This study explored the relevance of such knowledge for predicting and coping with harsh winter conditions (dzud) in a remote area of western Mongolia, where government support to disaster-affected herders is restricted by weak infrastructure. Structured face-to-face interviews were held in 50 households (HHs), addressing aspects of livestock possession and management as well as ...

Evapotranspiration and Drainage of Potash Tailings Covers
(2018-07-31)
Potassium is one of the three main nutrients for crop production, along with nitrogen and phosphorus. Potassium is found in the potash ores of evaporites. Evaporites are mineral deposits of evaporated landlocked sea water from a former arid climate. The processing of potash ores produces millions of tons of solid and liquid wastes with a high concentration of sodium chloride. In Germany the liquids are in some cases pressed under the earth or disposed in surface waters. In contrast, the solids are often heaped above ...
