Adoption of an improved bean seed variety and consumption of beans in rural Madagascar: Evidence from a randomised control trial
(Kassel University Press, 2017-10-20)
This paper studies access to, and adoption of improved seed, as well as the diffusion of improved seed information in a remote area of central Madagascar. The analysis is based on panel data gathered from 2012 to 2014 from 390 households in three villages. In 2013, a randomised control trial was applied. Half of the 390 households were randomly assigned to receive improved lima bean seed (Phaseolus lunatus), which were specifically bred for dry regions. Of the seed-receiving households, 50 % were randomly assigned ...

Technical efficiency and production potential of selected cereal crops in Senegal
(Kassel University Press, 2017-08-01)
This study focused on the production outcomes for five crops cultivated in Senegal: upland rice, lowland rice, groundnut, maize, and pearl millet. Technical efficiency (TE) of the production of each crop was estimated using data envelopment analysis, and the determinants of TEs were assessed using generalised linear regression analyses. Data were collected in face-to-face interviews with 66 farmers in the Kaolack region of Central Senegal during November 2011–February 2012. Average TEs for upland rice, lowland rice, ...

Activities and influence of veterinary drug marketers on antimicrobial usage in livestock production in Oyo and Kaduna States, Nigeria
(Kassel University Press, 2017-09-06)
Antimicrobial usage in animals contributes to the emergence of antimicrobial resistant bacterial strains. Focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and structured questionnaires were used to gather information about the characteristics and activities of antimicrobial marketers. Overall, 70 (56.9 %) of 123 ...

Changes in biochemical characteristics and Na and K content of caper (Capparis spinosa L.) seedlings under water and salt stress
(Kassel University Press, 2017-09-04)
In order to investigate the effect of water and salt stress on caper (Capparis spinosa L.) seedlings, a randomized complete block design with five replications was carried out in 2013 at Shiraz University, Iran. Water stress had three levels: 100 % (control), 75 %, and 5 % field capacity (FC), and five levels of salinity were applied: 0 (control), 4, 8, 12, and 18 dSm^(−1). The results indicated that salinity had a significantly negative effect on chlorophyll content of caper seedlings, while drought increased this ...

Index-based agricultural insurance products: challenges, opportunities and prospects for uptake in sub-Sahara Africa
(Kassel University Press, 2017-07-25)
Agricultural insurance products have been piloted in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to address climate related risks faced by farmers. However, these products in general face low rates of adoption in SSA. Factors and challenges that may explain the low uptake of index-based insurance products in SSA are reviewed in this paper with the objective of assessing and documenting (i) the insurance products available to farmers, (ii) factors influencing farmers to purchase insurance products, (iii) challenges limiting farmers ...
