Rural alternatives for local development: an intercultural analysis (cases from northern Ecuador)
(2022-12-31)
This study takes a historical and analytical tour of the experiences, ways of life and community knowledge oriented towards the construction of alternatives to achieve development in the communities of Cotacachi and Yunguilla, Ecuador. The ‘fine balance’ of West African savannah parklands: biomass generation versus firewood consumption
(2022-03-15)
In sub-Saharan Africa, the long-awaited fuelwood gap, resulting of the unbalance between a declining supply of firewood and the increasing demand of households, remains a latent social-ecological challenge. As its quantitative basis remains elusive, we have assessed agroforestry parklands, assumedly main providers of firewood, and firewood consumption in Dassari, Benin and Dano, Burkina Faso, both in the West African savannah. Data collected included botanical inventories, tree biomass estimations, householders’ ...

Effects of Petiveria alliacea (guinea hen weed) leaf extract on fermentation parameters, nutrient digestibility and faecal worm egg count in growing West African dwarf goats
(2022-03-21)
Medicinal plants are used in animal feeding as natural antimicrobial to improve nutrient utilisation and health status of animals. This study assessed the effects of varying concentration of Petiveria alliacea leaf extract (PLE) on fermentation parameters, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen utilisation and faecal worm egg count of growing West African dwarf goats. Twenty- four (24) growing West African dwarf bucks with average body weight of 8.50 ± 0.55 kg were divided into four treatment groups with six bucks each ...

Influencing factors of performance of agricultural cooperatives in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta
(2022-03-22)
The study identifies the influencing factors of the performance of agricultural cooperatives (ACs) in the Mekong Delta (MD) of Vietnam. The study used a disproportionate stratified sampling method, with 308 valid samples collected from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the districts and the Management Boards of ACs in 9 provinces in MD. Performance of AC is measured against five indicators, namely return on sales (ROS), return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), responsiveness to cooperative ...

The effects of grain storage technologies on maize marketing behaviour of smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe
(2020-01-13)
This study investigated the effects of grain storage practices on smallholder farmers’ maize marketing behaviour using primary data collected from 413 random households in Makoni and Shamva Districts of Zimbabwe. The data was analysed using the ordered probit model and the study results revealed that storage practices had significant effects on the maize marketing behaviour of smallholder farmers. Storage using insecticide and traditional granary increased the chances of farmers to become net sellers of maize. Using ...

Does backyard-keeping of native sows by smallholders in Quezon, Philippines, offer sustainability benefits compared to more intensive management of exotic sow breeds?
(2020-04-03)
The present study in Quezon, Philippines, assessed the sustainability of small-scale production systems, based either on native or on exotic sow breeds, using different survey tools in a socio-economic approach. In two research periods, data sets with 49 households and 68 households, respectively, all smallholder farmers keeping ≤5 sows, were compiled. In 2016, four municipalities were purposively selected, each representing one of Quezon’s four districts. In 2017, two municipalities, both with larger populations of ...

Are farmer perceptions among significant determinants of adoption of agricultural diversity in Malawi? A case of Lilongwe district
(2020-12-14)
Agricultural diversity can strengthen resilience of livelihood of farmers to climate change and market uncertainties while, potentially at the same time, o ering better dietary and nutritional prospects for households. Adoption of agricultural diversity in Malawi is low. Policy-makers, researchers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and extension staff need to understand dynamics of adoption of agricultural diversity in order to develop appropriate policies and interventions to promote agricultural diversification. ...

Determinants of sustainable agricultural intensification adoption and impacts on household productivity and consumption in Rwanda
(2022-01-31)
Sustainable agricultural intensification (SAI) involves those farming systems that produce in ways that improve or maintain productivity with minimal e ects on the environment so that critical farm resources can endure. The objective of this paper is to investigate the determinants and impacts of the adoption of three interdependent sustainable agricultural intensification practices (crop residue retention, minimum tillage, and maize-legume diversification) and their combinations on household productivity and consumption ...

Comparison of linear discriminant analysis, support vector machine and artificial neural network in classifying Nigerian local turkeys based on plumage colours using biometric traits
(2022-10-18)
The ability of linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN) models to differentiate biometric traits of Nigerian local turkeys was investigated in this study. The biometric traits (bodyweight, body length, breast girth, thigh length, shank length, keel length, wing length, and wingspan) in 200 (20-week-old) turkeys were measured. Seventy percent of the datasets were used to train the three models, with the remaining 30% being used to test their performance. All ...

Use of corncob biochar and urea for pakchoi (Brassica rapa L.) cultivation: Short-term impact of pyrolysis temperature and fertiliser dose on plant growth and yield
(2022-10-18)
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pyrolysis temperature of corncob biochar as a soil amendment and urea fertiliser on the growth and yield of pakchoi. Pakchoi was cultivated in pots
(13 cm height, 19 cm upper diameter, and 13.5 cm bottom diameter). Two factors including pyrolysis temperature of biochar and urea dose were combined with four levels each. Pyrolysis temperature factor consisted of B0 (no biochar), B1 (250 °C), B2 (300 °C), and B3 (350 °C). Urea dose consisted of F0 (no urea), F1 (0.6 g pot-¹), ...
