Investigating Motivational and Cognitive Factors which Impact the Success of Engineering Students
(2021-02-06)
Engineering students particularly struggle with mathematics in the first year of their university studies. A result of these difficulties are high drop-out rates among the engineering students. There are various measures to support the students in their studies such as preparatory courses or bridging courses. The contribution of this research is to investigate the impact of certain factors on engineering students’ success in their first year of studies in a supportive environment which includes a preparatory course, ...

Velocity-Dependent Perception Threshold for Discrete Imperceptible Repositioning in a Virtual Environment During Eye Blinks
(2021-07-02)
In this study, the relationship between a person’s walking speed and the perception threshold for discrete implicit repositioning during eyeblinks in a virtual environment is investigated. The aim is to estimate the perception thresholds for forward and backward repositioning during forward translation following eyeblink occurrences. A psychophysical method called Staircase Transformed and Weighted up/down is utilized to quantify the perception thresholds for forward and backward repositioning. The perception thresholds ...

Geometric morphometric analysis of spore shapes improves identification of fungi
(2021-08-05)
Morphology of organisms is an essential source of evidence for taxonomic decisions and understanding of ecology and evolutionary history. The geometric structure (i.e., numeric description of shape) provides richer and mathematically different information about an organism’s morphology than linear measurements. A little is known on how these two sources of morphological information (shape vs. size) contribute to the identification of organisms when implied simultaneously. This study hypothesized that combining geometric ...

Phosphetes via Transition Metal Free Ring Closure – Taking the Proper Turn at a Thermodynamic Crossing
(2021-05-10)
A transition metal free route to phosphetes featuring an exocyclic alkene unit is presented. In this approach phosphanides are added to a variety of diynes generating phosphaallylic intermediates which depending on the reaction conditions transform either to phosphetes or the corresponding phospholes. Investigation of the reaction mechanism by combined quantum chemical and experimental means identifies phosphole formation as thermodynamically controlled reaction path, whereas kinetic control furnishes the corresponding ...

The timber footprint of the German bioeconomy - state of the art and past development
(2021-04-01)
The article gives a comprehensive overview of the roundwood equivalents (RE) consumed in the German bioeconomy from Germany and abroad between 1995 and 2015, i.e., the Timber Footprint of final Consumption (TFPcon). The calculation is based on an adapted version of Exiobase 3.4. The sustainability of roundwood procurement for the TFPcon is assessed. A systematic embedding of the tree compartments considered in the TFP in the context of national forest inventories and material flow analysis is presented. The results ...

Polarization Dependent Photoinduced Supramolecular Chirality in High-Performance Azo Materials
(2021-05-11)
Here, we will show photo-induced supramolecular chirality in thin films of achiral amorphous polymers with azo groups in their side-chain. A matter of particular interest is the effect of various film thicknesses on azimuthal rotation and ellipticity of incident/transmitted polarized light. Furthermore, we investigated the temporal stability of inscribed chirality. By polarimetric measurements, we found out that the azimuthal rotation gets higher with layer thickness. In this scope, we were able to measure a very ...

Deutungen: eine qualitative Studie unmittelbarer Patientenreaktionen
(2021-04-22)

The Covid-19 containment effects of public health measures: A spatial difference-in-differences approach
(2021-04-12)
The paper studies the containment effects of public health measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 during the first wave of the pandemic in spring 2020 in Germany. To identify the effects of six compound sets of public health measures, we employ a spatial difference-in-differences approach. We find that contact restrictions, mandatory wearing of face masks and closure of schools substantially contributed to flattening the infection curve. The significance of the impact of restaurant closure does not prove to be robust. ...
