Highly dense arrays of diamond nanopillars have been fabricated using nanocrystalline diamond films (NCD) as the starting material. The fabrication process consisted of electron beam lithography (EBL), aluminum mask deposition and inductively coupled O2 plasma reactive ion etching. The EBL pattern fidelity was enhanced by proximity corrections and dose variations. Optimal control theory for a unitary operation under dissipative evolution

We show that optimizing a quantum gate for an open quantum system requires the time evolution of only three states irrespective of the dimension of Hilbert space. This represents a significant reduction in computational resources compared to the complete basis of Liouville space that is commonly believed necessary for this task. Spectral composition of low-coherence interferograms at high numerical apertures

Interference signals in coherence scanning interferometry at high numerical apertures and narrow bandwidth illumination are spectrally broadened. This enables phase analysis within a spectral range much wider than the spectral distribution of the light emitted by the light source. Consequently, different surface features can be resolved depending on the wavelength used for phase analysis of the interference signals.

Transient non-confining potentials for speeding up a single ion heat pump

We propose speeding up a single ion heat pump based on a tapered ion trap. If a trapped ion is excited in an oscillatory motion axially the radial degrees of freedom are cyclically expanded and compressed such that heat can be pumped between two reservoirs coupled to the ion at the turning points of oscillation. Phylogenetic and morphological studies in Xylodon (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota) with the addition of four new species

Xylodon (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota) is the largest segregate genus of Hyphodontia s.l. Based on molecular and morphological data, 77 species are accepted in Xylodon to date. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS and 28S sequences, including 38 new ITS and 20 28S sequences of Xylodon species, revealed four species new to science.
