Improving Vertical Wind Speed Extrapolation Using Short-Term Lidar Measurements
(2020-03-29)
This study investigates how short-term lidar measurements can be used in combination with a mast measurement to improve vertical extrapolation of wind speed. Several methods are developed and analyzed for their performance in estimating the mean wind speed, the wind speed distribution, and the energy yield of an idealized wind turbine at the target height of the extrapolation. These methods range from directly using the wind shear of the short-term measurement to a classification approach based on commonly available ...

Laser welding of grey cast iron with spheroidal graphite-influence of process parameters on crack formationand hardness
(2021-03-24)
In the investigation at hand, sheets of ferritic and pearlitic grey cast iron with spheroidalgraphite are welded using a fiber-laser. The influence of varying laser power and welding speed onthe macroscopic characteristics of the weld seam and crack formation are analyzed and discussed.Substantial crack formation with crack densities of up to2.93 cm−1are found. Furthermore, hardnessmeasurements are conducted to evaluate the formation of brittle phases within the weld metaland heat-affected zone. Peak hardness values ...

Food and Nutrition-Related Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices among Reproductive-age Women in Marginalized Areas in Sri Lanka
(2020-06-04)
Nutrient deficiencies are a public health problem in Sri Lanka. Achieving food security is a major challenge due to unhealthy eating patterns. The nutritional status of a woman and her knowledge is a powerful indicator of the nutritional security of her children and household food security. Nutrition-related knowledge and attitude are necessary for dietary changes towards a healthier dietary pattern. For that reason, food and nutrition-related Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) is one of the key factors to achieving ...

Bioeconomy from experts’ perspectives - Results of a global expert survey
(2019-05-01)
Effective global collaboration is crucial to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It requires an understanding of the needs of individual countries and their expectations related to bioeconomy. With the aim to explore the prospective developments in the global bioeconomy over the next 20 years, the German Bioeconomy Council, an independent advisory body to the German Federal Government, commissioned BIOCOM-AG to invite experts from around the globe to share their insights in a global expert survey. ...

Microstructure and Physicochemical Properties of Light Ice Cream: Effects of Extruded Microparticulated Whey Proteins and Process Design
(2021-06-21)
This study aimed to understand the influence of extruded microparticulated whey proteins (eMWPs) and process design in light ice cream processing by evaluating the microstructure and physicochemical properties. The inulin (T1), a commercial microparticulated whey protein (MWP) called simplesse (T2), a combination (T3), as well as eMWPs (as 50% volume of total particles): d50 < 3 µm (T4), and d50 > 5 µm (T5) were used as fat replacers. The first process design was pasteurization with subsequent homogenization (PH). ...

Wilde Urbaniten
(2020-04-24)

Comment on ‘Kidron, G. J. (2018). Biocrust research: A critical view on eight common hydrological‐related paradigms and dubious theses. Ecohydrology, e2061’
(2020-06-24)
Kidron (2018) uses a straw man argument in an attempt to debunk eight putative hydrological‐related paradigms he believes to be “common among hydrologists, ecologists, or microbiologists that investigate biocrusts.” These paradigms relate to the roles of physical crusts and vascular plants in biocrust development, the major drivers (climate, porosity, hydrophobicity, and exopolysaccharides) of hydrology (infiltration and runoff), and the effect of mosses on hydrology and therefore vascular plants. We see two major ...

Time Operator, Real Tunneling Time in Strong Field Interaction and the Attoclock
(2020-04-07)
Attosecond science, beyond its importance from application point of view, is of a fundamental interest in physics. The measurement of tunneling time in attosecond experiments offers a fruitful opportunity to understand the role of time in quantum mechanics. In the present work, we show that our real T-time relation derived in earlier works can be derived from an observable or a time operator, which obeys an ordinary commutation relation. Moreover, we show that our real T-time can also be constructed, inter alia, from ...

A simulation-based approach to evaluate objective material parameters from concrete rheometer measurements
(2019-12-31)
Modern concretes such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) show excellent strength properties combined with favorable flow properties. However, the flow properties depend strongly on process parameters during production (temperature, humidity etc.), but also change sensitively even with slight variations in the mixture. In order to ensure desired processing of the fluidlike material and consistent process quality, the flow properties of the concrete must be evaluated quantitatively and objectively. The usual ...

Die Wahlmüdigkeit der Studierenden
(2020-09-05)
