Fecal Cortisol Metabolites in Dairy Cows: A Cross-Sectional Exploration of Associations with Animal, Stockperson, and Farm Characteristics
(2020-10-01)
To date, little is known about influences on cows’ physiological stress levels on farms. The present study explored associations of fecal cortisol metabolite concentrations (FCM) with (1) farm factors including human–animal contact, (2) cows’ fear behaviors towards humans, and (3) milk production and udder health, involving 25 dairy farms and repeated fecal samples (n = 2625) from 674 focal cows. Farm factors via interviews and observations, avoidance distance (AD) and qualitative behavior assessment (QBA) during a ...

How to run a sustainability science research group sustainably?
(2020-08-25)
Rigorous sustainability science includes addressing pressing real-world problems, weaving multiple knowledge systems, and striving for transformative change. However, these key attributes of sustainability science often conflict with university structures and established academic work practices, for instance with regard to frequent long-distance travel. Such contradictions between key principles of sustainability and everyday practices are experienced by many researchers not only at university level, but also in their ...

Genetic diversity and differentiation of Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata (Wall. & G.Don) Cif. in the Hajar Mountains of Oman
(2020-10-04)
Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata (Wall. & G. Don) Cif. is one of the six subspecies important for domestication of olive described as having valuable breeding traits. It is distributed from South Africa to the Middle East and the Mediterranean region to China mainly at mid to high altitudes with adequate precipitation. The currently rather fragmented Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata populations likely represent outposts of a formerly larger and more connected area and are hence vulnerable to additional stresses such as ...

The J-integral for mixed-mode loaded cracks with cohesive zones
(2020-11-23)
The J-integral quantifies the loading of a crack tip, just as the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) emanating from the cohesive zone model. Both quantities, being based on fundamentally different interpretations of cracks in fracture mechanics of brittle or ductile materials, have been proven to be equivalent in the late 60s of the previous century, however, just for the simple mode-I loading case. The relation of J and CTOD turned out to be uniquely determined by the constitutive law of the cohesive zone in front ...

Daniel, Ute: Beziehungsgeschichten. Politik und Medien im 20. Jahrhundert, 464 S., Hamburger Edition, Hamburg 2018.
(2020-05-07)

Porcher, Jocelyne/Estebanez, Jean (Hrsg.): Animal Labor. A New Perspective on Human-Animal Relations, 182 S., transcript, Bielefeld 2019.
(2020-07-23)

Complex dynamics in psychosocial work with unaccompanied minor refugees with uncertain future prospects: A case study
(2020-09-09)
This case study explores the arriving process of an unaccompanied minor refugee in Germany and his perception of the psychosocial support he received. The aim is to elaborate possibilities to support refugee adolescents' arrival processes adequately. Two interviews—theme‐centered and narrative—were conducted and afterwards examined by a group of five researchers who used experts' validation as the analyzing tool. Four main dimensions were identified contributing to the complex dynamics in psychosocial work with ...

3D printed dielectric lens for the gain enhancement of a broadband antenna
(2020-01-13)
A novel 3D printed dielectric lens to enhance antenna gain parameters is presented. The lens is fabricated using a fused deposition method (FDM) which is a cost‐effective and an efficient 3D printing technique. Poly‐methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is used as a dielectric material due to its good RF properties. The thickness of the dielectric lens is 14 mm and provides a gain enhancement of up to 6.9 dBi over a wide frequency range. The dielectric lens is designed and computationally analyzed to demonstrate refractive index ...

Assessment of the N- and P-Fertilization Effect of Black Soldier Fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) By-Products on Maize
(2020-09-22)
To meet the growing demand for an alternative animal protein source, the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) industry is expanding. Thus, the valuation of its byproducts, foremost BSF frass, is getting more economic and ecological weight. Three different residues, BSF frass, larval skins, and dead adult flies, were compared with a mineral and an organic commercial fertilizer in a pot trial with maize (Zea mays L., [Poales: Poaceae]). byproducts were applied in three nutrient-based application rates (180; 215 ...
