Placemaking in Action: Factors That Support or Obstruct the Development of Urban Community Gardens
(2020-01-16)
The paper examines factors that support or obstruct the development of urban community garden projects. It combines a systematic scholarly literature review with empirical research from case studies located in New Zealand and Germany. The findings are discussed against the backdrop of placemaking processes: urban community gardens are valuable platforms to observe space-to-place transformations. Following a social-constructionist approach, literature-informed enablers and barriers for the development of urban community ...

Induction of protein aggregation and starvation response by tRNA modification defects
(2020-08-29)
Posttranscriptional modifications of anticodon loops contribute to the decoding efficiency of tRNAs by supporting codon recognition and loop stability. Consistently, strong synthetic growth defects are observed in yeast strains simultaneously lacking distinct anticodon loop modifications. These phenotypes are accompanied by translational inefficiency of certain mRNAs and disturbed protein homeostasis resulting in accumulation of protein aggregates. Different combinations of anticodon loop modification defects were ...

Soziale Arbeit – eine Menschenrechtsprofession?
(2020-11-04)

Diffusion of labor standards through supplier–subcontractor networks: An agent‐based model
(2020-06-22)
Subcontracting represents a popular business model in supply chains across industries. In the case of hidden subcontracting, subcontractors are beyond the visible horizon of the (focal) buying firm. Hence, buyers must rely on a cascading effect for diffusing practices such as compliance with labor standards through their supply networks. Motivated by the case of the Bangladeshi garment industry, we constructed an agent‐based model with buyers, first‐tier suppliers, and subcontractors as agents in a supply network in ...

Künstler in Corona-Zeiten
(2020-09-15)

A Field Experiment on Reducing Drinking Straw Consumption by Default
(2020-09-16)
Against the background of the pollution of the environment through plastic waste, we conducted a field experiment (N = 195) to test the effectiveness of a default nudge intervention that aimed at reducing the consumption of plastic drinking straws. We assumed that separating straws from cups by default leads to an overall decrease in straw consumption. We hypothesized that individuals would consume straws less frequently when they had to pick straws actively out of a separate straw box for their drink compared to ...

A value-theoretic approach to economic dynamics and evolution—synthesizing different Marxian modules in a simulation model
(2020-05-08)
This part is devoted to simulation experiments based on the simulation model developed in part I from the value-theoretic reconstruction of the main parts of Marx’s critique of Political Economy. After introducing the main parameters and the range of their variation (Section 1), a singular run as well as a sensitivity analysis for the chosen standard configuration (‘moderation regime’) is presented in Section 2. This is accomplished by configurations depicting characteristics of the capitalist development emphasized ...

Revisiting climate change effects on winter chill in mountain oases of northern Oman
(2020-10-07)
For centuries, traditional high-altitude oases in Oman have depended on the cultivation of deciduous fruit trees. This study explores the effects of climate change on winter chill (estimated as Chilling Hours—CH and Chill Portions—CP), a prerequisite to overcoming dormancy and initiating flowering, in three Omani oases. The results are compared with findings from an earlier study which reported a decrease in the numbers of CH in high-elevation oases by an average of 1.2–9.5 CH year−1 between 1983 and 2008. Location-specific ...

Fluorescence Microscopy of Superplasticizers in Cementitious Systems: Applications and Challenges
(2020-08-24)
In addition to the desired plasticizing effect, superplasticizers used in high and ultra-high performance concretes (UHPC) influence the chemical system of the pastes and for example retardation of the cement hydration occurs. Thus, superplasticizers have to be chosen wisely for every material composition and application. To investigate the essential adsorption of these polymers to particle surfaces in-situ to overcome several practical challenges of superplasticizer research, fluorescence microscopy is useful. In ...
