The Dark Triad and Deception Perceptions
(2019-08-13)
The present cross-sectional study (N = 205) tested the hypothesis that the Dark Triad traits – narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy – and the PID-5 maladaptive personality traits – Negative Affectivity, Detachment, Antagonism, Disinhibition, and Psychoticism – are associated with specific deception-related perceptions: perceived cue-based deception detectability, perceived deception production ability, and perceived deception detection ability. Participants completed personality and deception measures in an ...

Multi-Scale Governance of Sustainable Natural Resource Use—Challenges and Opportunities for Monitoring and Institutional Development at the National and Global Level
(2016-08-09)
In a globalized economy, the use of natural resources is determined by the demand of modern production and consumption systems, and by infrastructure development. Sustainable natural resource use will require good governance and management based on sound scientific information, data and indicators. There is a rich literature on natural resource management, yet the national and global scale and macro-economic policy making has been underrepresented. We provide an overview of the scholarly literature on multi-scale ...

Immunolocalization of Arthropsin in the Onychophoran Euperipatoides rowelli (Peripatopsidae)
(2016-08-04)
Opsins are light-sensitive proteins that play a key role in animal vision and are related to the ancient photoreceptive molecule rhodopsin found in unicellular organisms. In general, opsins involved in vision comprise two major groups: the rhabdomeric (r-opsins) and the ciliary opsins (c-opsins). The functionality of opsins, which is dependent on their protein structure, may have changed during evolution. In arthropods, typically r-opsins are responsible for vision, whereas in vertebrates c-opsins are components of ...

Tailoring Phospholes for Imprint of Fluorescent 3D Structures
(2019-11-06)
PMMA based polymer blends have been infused with luminescent phospholes and have been structured via nanoimprint. While symmetrically substituted phospholes are prone to crystallization and phase separation, structural modification of the phosphole backbone in the α‐ and β‐positions has been explored, which prevents these issues; a structural explanation for this is suggested. Best phase integrity has been obtained for β‐silyl‐substituted phospholes, which were implemented in thin films and beads. The emission ...

On the Evolution of Residual Stresses, Microstructure and Cyclic Performance of High-Manganese Austenitic TWIP-Steel after Deep Rolling
(2019-07-25)
The mechanical properties and the near surface microstructure of the high-manganese twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel X40MnCrAl19-2 have been investigated after deep rolling at high (200 ∘C ), room and cryogenic temperature using different deep rolling forces. Uniaxial tensile tests reveal an increase in yield strength from 400 MPa to 550 MPa due to surface treatment. The fatigue behavior of selected conditions was analyzed and correlated to the prevailing microstructure leading to an increased number of cycles ...

Influence of Surface Roughness on Pressure Drop in Two‐Phase Flow of Saturated Hydrocarbons
(2019-12-19)
Pressure drop of propane and propylene in gas‐liquid saturation state are investigated for copper and mild steel test tubes. The surface structure of both tubes is determined with the focus variation method, yielding a six times higher roughness for the steel tube, although both tubes are manufactured in the same manner. In both tubes single phase pressure drop validation measurements are carried out and compared to known correlations. For two‐phase investigations both fluids are investigated at the reduced saturation ...

Bioeconomy from experts’ perspectives - Results of a global expert survey
(2019-05-01)
Effective global collaboration is crucial to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It requires an understanding of the needs of individual countries and their expectations related to bioeconomy. With the aim to explore the prospective developments in the global bioeconomy over the next 20 years, the German Bioeconomy Council, an independent advisory body to the German Federal Government, commissioned BIOCOM-AG to invite experts from around the globe to share their insights in a global expert survey. ...

A simulation-based approach to evaluate objective material parameters from concrete rheometer measurements
(2019-12-31)
Modern concretes such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) show excellent strength properties combined with favorable flow properties. However, the flow properties depend strongly on process parameters during production (temperature, humidity etc.), but also change sensitively even with slight variations in the mixture. In order to ensure desired processing of the fluidlike material and consistent process quality, the flow properties of the concrete must be evaluated quantitatively and objectively. The usual ...

Distributed Practice: Rarely Realized in Self-Regulated Mathematical Learning
(2018-11-20)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect and use of distributed practice in the context of self-regulated mathematical learning in high school. With distributed practice, a fixed learning duration is spread over several sessions, whereas with massed practice, the same time is spent learning in one session. Distributed practice has been proven to be an effective tool for improving long-term retention of verbal material and simple procedural knowledge in mathematics, at least when the practice ...

Candidates for photic entrainment pathways to the circadian clock via optic lobe neuropils in the Madeira cockroach
(2019-12-20)
The compound eye of cockroaches is obligatory for entrainment of the Madeira cockroach's circadian clock, but the cellular nature of its entrainment pathways is enigmatic. Employing multiple‐label immunocytochemistry, histochemistry, and backfills, we searched for photic entrainment pathways to the accessory medulla (AME), the circadian clock of the Madeira cockroach. We wanted to know whether photoreceptor terminals could directly contact pigment‐dispersing factor‐immunoreactive (PDF‐ir) circadian pacemaker neurons ...
