Spiritual values shape taxonomic diversity, vegetation composition, and conservation status in woodlands of the Northern Zagros, Iran
(2021)
Sacred groves are under-researched in Muslim countries so that their overall contribution to biodiversity conservation remains unknown. We studied 22 sacred groves and 45 surrounding woodlands in Northern Zagros, Iran, to compare taxonomic diversity, vegetation composition, and the conservation status of plant species. Sacred groves had higher taxonomic diversity and a more valuable species pool by sheltering numerous endangered plant species. Multivariate analysis indicated a substantial difference in the vegetation ...

Additive surface texturing of cutting tools using pulsed laser implantation with hard ceramic particles
(2020-09-15)
In recent years surface texturing of the cutting tools has proved to improve tribological characteristics at tool/chip and tool/workpiece interface and help to reduce cutting and feed forces as well as tool wear. Most, if not all, of the studies have focused on subtractively made textures whereby the material is removed from the surface. This study investigates the performance of additively made surface structures whereby hard ceramic particles are dispersed in the form of dome shaped textures on the surface of the ...

A New Identity for Generalized Hypergeometric Functions and Applications
(2019-01-18)
We establish a new identity for generalized hypergeometric functions and apply it for first- and second-kind Gauss summation formulas to obtain some new summation formulas. The presented identity indeed extends some results of the recent published paper (Some summation theorems for generalized hypergeometric functions, Axioms, 7 (2018), Article 38).

Dissimilar Friction Stir Butt Welding of Aluminium and Copper with Cross-Section Adjustment for Current-Carrying components
(2018-08-24)
Manufacturing dissimilar joints of aluminum and copper is a challenging task. However, friction stir welding (FSW) was found to be a suitable technique to produce aluminum–copper joints. Due to different electrical conductivities between aluminum and copper, an adjustment of the cross-section is required to realize electrical conductors free of resistive losses. Taking this into account, this paper presents initial results on the mechanical and electrical properties of friction stir butt welded aluminum and copper ...

Phenotypic diversity, major genes and production potential of local chickens and guinea fowl in Tamale, northern Ghana
(2017-06-26)
Objective:
Our study provides information on phenotypes of local chickens and guinea fowl and their body measures as well as on major genes in local chickens in northern Ghana.
Methods:
Qualitative and morphometric traits were recorded on 788 local chickens and 394 guinea fowl in urban households in Tamale, Ghana.
Results:
The results showed considerable variation of color traits and numerous major genes in local chickens, while color variations and related genotypes in guinea fowl were limited. In local chickens, ...

Beyond spikes: Multiscale computational analysis of in vivo long-term recordings in the cockroach circadian clock
(2019-09-23)
The circadian clock of the nocturnal Madeira cockroach is located in the accessory medulla, a small nonretinotopic neuropil in the brain’s visual system. The clock comprises about 240 neurons that control rhythms in physiology and behavior such as sleep-wake cycles. The clock neurons contain an abundant number of partly colocalized neuropeptides, among them pigment-dispersing factor (PDF), the insects’ most important circadian coupling signal that controls sleep-wake rhythms. We performed long-term loose-patch clamp ...

Situational Judgment Tests as a method for measuring personality: Development and validity evidence for a test of Dependability
(2019-02-27)
Situational Judgment Tests (SJTs) are criterion valid low fidelity measures that have gained much popularity as predictors of job performance. A broad variety of SJTs have been studied, but SJTs measuring personality are still rare. Personality traits such as Conscientiousness are valid predictors of many educational, work and life-related outcomes and SJTs are less prone to faking than classical self-report measurements. We developed an SJT measure of Dependability, a core facet of Conscientiousness, by gathering ...

Bis‐[3]Ferrocenophanes with Central >E−E’< Bonds (E, E’=P, SiH): Preparation, Properties, and Thermal Activation
(2019-06-26)
A series of bis‐[3]ferrocenophanes of the general type Fe(C5H4E’)2E−E(E'C5H4)2Fe (E=P, SiH and E’=PtBu, NneoPentyl, NSi(CH3)3) with an isolobal molecular framework have been prepared and characterized by heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography. The thermal dissociation behavior with respect to homolytic fission of the central bond generating phosphorus centered radicals was investigated using EPR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations.

Socio-Economic Viability of Urban Agriculture - A Comparative Analysis of Success Factors in Germany
(2019-04-04)
Socio-economic viability of urban agriculture (UA) is, especially regarding non-commercially oriented initiatives, at most a generically treated issue in scientific literature. Given a lack of data on yields, labor input, or saved expenditures, only a few studies have described it either from a cost-avoidance or a specific benefit generation perspective. Our hypothesis is that hybrid roles of consumers and producers in urban agriculture challenge the appraisal of socio-economic viability. This paper presents an ...
