Vibrationally Resolved Absorption and Fluorescence Cross Sections of Adamantane in the Far-ultraviolet Spectral Range on an Absolute Scale
(2023-07-20)
High-resolution absorption, dispersed fluorescence emission, and photoionization cross sections are presented for gas-phase adamantane excited by synchrotron radiation in the exciting-photon energy range of 6–30 eV. Relative and absolute absorption cross sections of so-far unmatched resolution of down to 0.27 cm−¹ line width in the region from 6.4–28 eV are shown along with newly discovered vibronic substructures around the HOMO–LUMO transition. Absorption line positions are provided with very high accuracy and listed ...

Analyzing the implications of organic standardization and certification in alternative food networks: The capability approach
(2023-06-14)
Although organic standards and certification schemes have a crucial role in ensuring quality, safety, and sustainability within food systems, there is a need to critically analyze their implications on human capabilities within alternative food networks (AFNs). Therefore, this paper draws upon the capability approach to analyze the implications of three governance mechanisms (i.e., third-party, social control, and hybrid certification) on human flourishing within AFNs in Ceará, Brazil. The three cases primarily build ...

Interrupting the neoliberal masculine state machinery? Strategic selectivities and municipalist practice in Barcelona and Zagreb
(2022-07-07)
All municipalist initiatives are confronted with what Marx called the ‘state machinery’: an ensemble of apparatuses protecting the status quo of capitalist accumulation. It is difficult for municipalist movements to sustain their momentum of storming the city halls in the face of this reality. Looking at Barcelona En Comú (Barcelona in Common) and Zagreb Je NAŠ! (Zagreb Is Ours!), the article discusses what experiences municipalist actors gain when inspecting the state machinery close up. We identify the traces they ...

Depression, Race-Based Bias, and Judgements of Veracity
(2023-07-26)
The depressive realism hypothesis suggests that depressed individuals have a more realistic perception than nondepressed. Most studies depict the effects of depressive realism on self-perceptions. However, some lie detection studies suggest the effects of depressive realism on the perception of others. Our study investigated the hypothesis that individuals with subclinical depression levels (dysphoric) show a heightened accuracy in lie detection and a lower truth bias. Furthermore, we expected these effects to be ...

Strategies towards evaluation beyond scientific impact
(Librello, 2015)
Various research fields, like organic agricultural research, are dedicated to solving real-world problems and contributing to sustainable development. Therefore, systems research and the application of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches are increasingly endorsed. However, research performance depends not only on self-conception, but also on framework conditions of the scientific system, which are not always of benefit to such research fields. Recently, science and its framework conditions have been ...

Accuracy of outcome anticipation, but not gaze behavior, differs against left- and right-handed penalties in team-handball goalkeeping
(Frontiers Research Foundation, 2015)
Low perceptual familiarity with relatively rarer left-handed as opposed to more common right-handed individuals may result in athletes' poorer ability to anticipate the former's action intentions. Part of such left-right asymmetry in visual anticipation could be due to an inefficient gaze strategy during confrontation with left-handed individuals. To exemplify, observers may not mirror their gaze when viewing left- vs. right-handed actions but preferentially fixate on an opponent's right body side, irrespective of ...

Design to manufacture of fully stressed curved structures through elastic deformation of thin steel sheets with interlocking connections
(2023-09-12)
The research project presents the development of a fully digital design to manufacture process chain for high-performance curved steel elements produced by laser cutting thin steel sheets and assembled through elastic deformation. Although there have been developments in industrial robotic setups to automate steel beam bending, these processes rely on an iterative approach and are time-consuming and costly when there is a need for high accuracy.
The paper shows how the production of tailor-made geometric parts ...

Potentials of reusing steel skeleton structures from multistorey parking units for architectural applications
(2023-09-12)
In the context of urban mining, which aims to extend the value chain of building components to conserve resources, save energy, avoid waste, and reduce emissions, the reuse of structural steel has great potential, that has hardly been exploited to date.
In Germany, a significant amount of steel is found within multistorey parking units. Due to the standardised and mass relevant steel used in these structures and considering their diminishing significance in the context of transportation transitions, these buildings ...

Yield stability of silage maize double cropping systems across nine German environments
(2023-10-19)
Introduction: Yield and its stability are both vital characteristics to evaluate the viability of cropping systems. However, the current frames of field research hardly allow an accurate evaluation of short-term effect stability. Therefore, over nine German environments (three years and three locations), first crop, maize, total harvested dry biomass yield (DMY), and maize dry matter content (DMC) variability were evaluated through a risk assessment in an organically managed silage maize experiment comprising 18 ...

Dissimilar Laser Beam Welding of Titanium to Stainless Steel Using Pure Niobium as Filler Material in Lap Joint Configuration
(2023-09-20)
In the present investigation, commercially pure titanium is welded to AISI 316L stainless steel by intermixing niobium as filler material in a lap joint configuration. For this purpose, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser with various pulse durations and pulse peak powers is employed to obtain different mixing conditions for the materials. It will be demonstrated that, despite the implementation of the filler material, the weld seams are characterized by a high affinity for cracking, which in turn can be attributed to the formation ...
