Structural and superelastic properties of Fe–Mn–Al–Ni shape memory alloy sheets produced on industrial process routes by hot rolling
(2023-05-02)
In the present study the structural and functional properties of Fe–Mn–Al–Ni shape memory alloy sheets produced on an industrial process route focusing on hot rolling were investigated. The as-processed condition is characterized by a high fraction of the non-transforming γ-phase, which ensures good workability, but is associated with poor superelasticity. The alloy shows good structural properties with a yield strength of about 600 MPa, which is well above the usual transformation stress related to the martensitic ...

New Distributed Optimization Method for TSO-DSO Coordinated Grid Operation Preserving Power System Operator Sovereignity
(2023-06-16)
Electrical power system operators (SOs) are free to realize grid operations according to their own strategies. However, because resulting power flows also depend on the actions of neighboring SOs, appropriate coordination is needed to improve the resulting system states from an overall perspective and from an individual SO perspective. In this paper, a new method is presented that preserves the data integrity of the SOs and their independent operation of their grids. This method is compared with a non-coordinated ...

Comparative environmental footprint analysis of ultra-high-performance concrete using Portland cement and alkali-activated materials
(2023-05-22)
Considering the ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction and efficient use of resource targets set by the Sustainable Development Goals and the importance of concrete structures to achieve these goals, there is an increasing need to study the environmental performance of different concrete production alternatives. Cement is one of the main building materials that contribute significantly to global warming; therefore, studying the environmental performance of innovative binders that can substitute the use of cement ...

Lifetime Prediction with Combined Hygro-Thermo-Mechanical Influences on Thick Layer Adhesives
(2023-05-31)
Semi-structural bonded joints of steel components are exposed to long-term stresses in addition to water diffusion, temperature changes and varying external forces during operation. These hygro-thermomechanical loadings lead to successive degradation of stiffness and strength due to damage resulting from chemical aging and fatigue processes, causing failure of the bonded joint when its service life is reached. In the following contribution, a methodology is presented to predict the service life of hygro-thermo-mechanically ...

Optimal attitude maneuvers in the presence of prohibited directions
(2023-05-31)
We consider the problem of realigning a space telescope from one observation target to the next in the presence of prohibited directions. More specifically, we want to steer the space telescope – modelled as a gyrostat – from an initial attitude at rest to a final attitude at rest within a fixed time interval. During the motion, the line of sight of the telescope must be kept away from forbidden directions towards bright objects like the sun, moon or earth due to power or thermal requirements. The kinematics of the ...

Influence of Mean Stress on Lifetime Prediction of Adhesive Bonds
(2023-05-31)
The importance of adhesive bonds in the field of joining technology is increasing due to their advantageous properties. One of these attributes is the possibility to reduce the weight compared to welded joints in group of components. For a safe design, the knowledge of the lifetime of these components is essential. Various methods are used for the prediction of the lifetime under cyclic loading. On the one hand there are test-based methods, on the other hand simulation-based approaches. Test-based ones are often ...

A novel cubic-exp evaluation algorithm considering non-symmetrical axial response signals of confocal microscopes
(2023-06-26)
The depth discrimination in confocal microscopy is based on the digital analysis of depth response signals obtained by each camera pixel during measurement. Various signal-processing algorithms are used for this purpose. The accuracy of these algorithms is inter alia restricted by the axial symmetry of the signals. However, in practice response signals are rather asymmetrical especially in case of measurement objects with critical surface structures such as edges or steep flanks. We present a novel signal-processing ...

Vibrationally Resolved Absorption and Fluorescence Cross Sections of Adamantane in the Far-ultraviolet Spectral Range on an Absolute Scale
(2023-07-20)
High-resolution absorption, dispersed fluorescence emission, and photoionization cross sections are presented for gas-phase adamantane excited by synchrotron radiation in the exciting-photon energy range of 6–30 eV. Relative and absolute absorption cross sections of so-far unmatched resolution of down to 0.27 cm−¹ line width in the region from 6.4–28 eV are shown along with newly discovered vibronic substructures around the HOMO–LUMO transition. Absorption line positions are provided with very high accuracy and listed ...

Hybrid modeling of viscoelastic and switching–induced heating in ferroelectrics
(2023-03-24)
This contribution focuses on two effects causing a temperature change in electrically loaded ferroelectrics. These materials are often subjected to cyclic loading, where viscoelasticity prevails at lower electric fields, whereas dissipative heating by domain switching dominates above the coercive field. While viscoelasticity is modeled within a phenomenological, rheological framework, the ferroelectric constitutive behaviour is described based on a microphysical model. Merging both approaches results in the hybrid ...

On the Reliability of Automated Analysis of Fracture Surfaces Using a Novel Computer Vision-Based Tool
(2023-08-05)
Fracture surface analysis is of utmost importance with respect to structural integrity of metallic materials. This especially holds true for additively manufactured materials. Despite an increasing trend of automatization of testing methods, the analysis and classification of fatigue fracture surface images is commonly done manually by experts. Although this leads to correct results in most cases, it has several disadvantages, e.g., the need of a huge knowledge base to interpret images correctly. In present work, an ...
