Learning planning communication in cooperative multi-agent settings
(2023)
This work is a holistic investigation of the question of how and why reinforcement learning (RL) agents fail to develop planning communication in a cooperative setting. It is also a guide to anyone trying to build a system that learns to use planning communication patterns. We examine the state of the art in multi-agent systems and emergent communication for the existence of communication patterns that share information about future actions and plans. To do this, we strategically formulate hypotheses that question ...

Finite Element Simulations for the Design of Therapeutic Approaches for Retinal Diseases
(2022)
The retinal disease age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. In this thesis, motivated by the drug (antibody) treatment of this disease, we designed long-term three dimensional Finite Element simulations of the drug distribution in the healthy human eye. The underlying model consists of a time-dependent convection-diffusion equation coupled to a stationary Darcy equation describing the flow of the aqueous humor through the vitreous medium. We replaced the ...

Structural characterization and distribution of zebrafish germ plasm during interphase and mitosis
(2007-06-21)
In zebrafish, germ cells are responsible for transmitting the genetic information from one generation to the next. During the first cleavages of zebrafish embryonic development, a specialized part of the cytoplasm known as germ plasm, is responsible of committing four blastomeres to become the progenitors of all germ cells in the forming embryo.
Much is known about how the germ plasm is spatially distributed in early stages of primordial germ cell development, a process described to be dependant on microtubules and ...

Attribute Exploration with Multiple Experts
(2023)
Attribute exploration is a knowledge acquisition method from the realm of formal concept analysis that allows a domain expert to efficiently uncover the dependencies in a domain. It is based on a question-answering scheme where the exploration algorithm generates questions about dependencies in the domain that are then answered by a domain expert. Even though many variants and extension to this were developed, only few attempts to incorporate multiple experts were made. The overarching goal of this thesis is to extend ...

Application of Temporal Airy Pulses for investigating the origin of Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures and for developing new tools in cell surgery and malignant tissue identification
(2023)
In this thesis, ultrashort Temporal Airy Pulses are used to study Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) in Part I and to enable the photoinjection of fluorescent markers into single living cells in Part II, Chapter 8. In both cases, the laser pulse excites a dielectric material (fused silica and water) and the special spatio-temporal dynamics of the interaction of a Temporal Airy Pulse with the dielectric is exploited to extend the shape of the excited region along the axis of laser propagation. For the ...

Market-driven harvesting of non-timber forest products and the governance of communal forests in the south-east lowveld of Zimbabwe.
(2023-07)
Despite forests providing a wide range of important products and services for much of Zimbabwe’s population, natural forests are threatened by deforestation. The highest rates of deforestation occur in communal forests. Communal forest resources in Zimbabwe show evidence of increased degradation and signs of a breakdown of local institutions for resources management. These signs of a breakdown of local institutions are coupled with evidence of a lack of any emerging alternative institutions for conservation of forest ...

Situative Teams in Cooperative Autonomous Systems
(2023)
Distributed systems have been established in many areas of IT and will play an even more significant role in the future. Such systems are no longer limited to specific fields of application but interconnect many different domains. They encompass, e. g. Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, service robotics, and autonomous vehicles. The integrated sub-systems communicate in order to exchange information and, if necessary, perform tasks together. Moreover, the number of interconnected sub-systems is constantly growing. ...
