The effect of edible coating with combined Thymus Vulgaris extract and glycerol monoestearate on oyster mushroom ҆s shelf life
(2020-07-30)
Shelf-life of mushrooms is very low, because of several characteristics, such as their thin epidermal structure and high respiration rates. They tend to lose their quality after harvest. Hence, mushrooms need supportive care to keep freshness. Several protective methods have been recommended. In the current study, the effect of lipid-edible coating with different doses of glycerol monoestearate and thyme extract, for the extending of edible mushroom’s shelf life was evaluated. After, preparation of aqueous thyme ...

Analysis of household food expenditure patterns. A case of Shamva district Zimbabwe
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2020-03-31)
The study was designed to analyse the food expenditure patterns of smallholder farming households. Income and expenditure data were collected from 281 randomly sampled farming households in Shamva District. Descriptive statistics (mean and frequency) were used to analyse the income sources and main expenditure categories. The Ordinary Least Squares regression was used to model the determinants of household food expenditure. The results indicated cash crop, food crop and livestock sales as the major farm income sources. ...

A review of inter-firm relationship quality in supply chains
(2020-03-28)
Purpose – This paper aims to conduct a review of the recent literature on inter-firm relationship quality (RQ) in supply chain (SC) settings.
Design/methodology/approach – 100 English-language scientific publications on inter-firm RQ, published from 2006 to 2015 were selected and analyzed by using a content analysis approach.
Findings – The results of the frequency analysis map the antecedents, dimensions and consequences - particularly the performance and behavioral intentions of collaborating partners - of ...

Are farmer perceptions among significant determinants of adoption of agricultural diversity in Malawi? A case of Lilongwe district
(2020-12-14)
Agricultural diversity can strengthen resilience of livelihood of farmers to climate change and market uncertainties while, potentially at the same time, o ering better dietary and nutritional prospects for households. Adoption of agricultural diversity in Malawi is low. Policy-makers, researchers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and extension staff need to understand dynamics of adoption of agricultural diversity in order to develop appropriate policies and interventions to promote agricultural diversification. ...

Competitiveness of sea buckthorn farming in Mongolia: A policy analysis matrix
(2020-05-09)
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) provides multiple products that are beneficial to human health. In addition, the plant is also used to combat desertification. In contrast to the vast ecological, agronomic and nutritional literature on this species, little is known about its economic and marketing aspects, particularly in Central Asia. We therefore analysed the private and social competitiveness of sea buckthorn farming in 21 households of Bulgan county of Khovd province in Mongolia. The results show that half ...

Dynamic Tensile Deformation of High Strength Aluminum Alloys Processed Following Novel Thermomechanical Treatment Strategies
(2020-05-14)
Herein, the effects of a very recently introduced novel thermomechanical process route on the microstructural evolution and dynamic tensile deformation behavior of two different precipitation hardenable aluminum alloys, i.e., AA6082 and AA7075, are studied. The investigated materials are hot formed and quenched in differently tempered tools to reveal the influence of cooling rate. Microstructure analysis is conducted to study the influences of different cooling strategies on the microstructure evolution and prevailing ...

Spatial variation of nutritional content in Enhalus acoroides (L.f.) royle seeds and seed pods
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2020-04-14)
Coastal and small islands communities generally have limited access to fresh vegetables. The tropical seagrass Enhalus acoroides tends to fruit during the rainy season, when sea conditions often prevent fishing. Coastal communities in several countries, including Indonesia, traditionally collect seagrass fruits for food and traditional remedies. This study measured levels of 6 key nutrients in Enhalus acoroides fruit (seeds and seedpods). Samples were collected from two sites where E. acoroides fruits are harvested ...

Factors for the success of agricultural cooperatives in Brazil
(2021-02-25)
The Brazilian cooperative agribusiness is in a transitional phase. This moment is marked by the advancement of market globalisation, which has exerted great competitive pressure on national agribusiness. To survive and thrive in a globalised and fiercely competitive environment, cooperatives must face new challenges in the pursuit of competitiveness. This study aimed to identify and describe the main success or failure factors affecting agricultural cooperatives. To this end, bibliographic research was used as a ...

Optimisation of the seedball technology for sorghum production under nutrient limitations
(2021-04-13)
The seedball technology is a simple and affordable seed-pelleting technique that uses locally available materials such as sand, loam, wood ash and seeds to enhance early crop establishment. It has been shown to be effective for pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) subsistence production in Sahelian environments. The objective of this study was to optimise the seedball technology for sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) under greenhouse conditions. Series of pot experiments were conducted in order to identify optimal ...

Determinants of protected tomato production technologies among smallholder peri-urban producers in Kiambu, Kenya
(2021-03-05)
Climate variability and the rise in incidences of pests and diseases continue to undermine production of high value vegetables among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. In order to respond to these challenges, protected farming technologies (PFT) (such as greenhouses) which modify the plant environment and therefore aid in avoiding the harmful eects of climatic factors have been promoted. Greenhouses protect the crops against high solar radiation and heavy rainfall that have the potential of destroying vulnerable ...
