Finite Element Simulations for the Design of Therapeutic Approaches for Retinal Diseases
(2022)
The retinal disease age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. In this thesis, motivated by the drug (antibody) treatment of this disease, we designed long-term three dimensional Finite Element simulations of the drug distribution in the healthy human eye. The underlying model consists of a time-dependent convection-diffusion equation coupled to a stationary Darcy equation describing the flow of the aqueous humor through the vitreous medium. We replaced the ...

Structural characterization and distribution of zebrafish germ plasm during interphase and mitosis
(2007-06-21)
In zebrafish, germ cells are responsible for transmitting the genetic information from one generation to the next. During the first cleavages of zebrafish embryonic development, a specialized part of the cytoplasm known as germ plasm, is responsible of committing four blastomeres to become the progenitors of all germ cells in the forming embryo.
Much is known about how the germ plasm is spatially distributed in early stages of primordial germ cell development, a process described to be dependant on microtubules and ...

Application of Temporal Airy Pulses for investigating the origin of Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures and for developing new tools in cell surgery and malignant tissue identification
(2023)
In this thesis, ultrashort Temporal Airy Pulses are used to study Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) in Part I and to enable the photoinjection of fluorescent markers into single living cells in Part II, Chapter 8. In both cases, the laser pulse excites a dielectric material (fused silica and water) and the special spatio-temporal dynamics of the interaction of a Temporal Airy Pulse with the dielectric is exploited to extend the shape of the excited region along the axis of laser propagation. For the ...

The Corticiaceae (Basidiomycetes) in Taiwan
(2010-06-02)
Geographically, Taiwan is an Island and situated in the northeast of Asia, on the western side of the Pacific Basin, at the southeast of main China, south of Japan, and north of the Philippines. The main topographic character is the longitudinally oriented mountainous area. More than 200 peaks rise above 3000 m. They departed Taiwan into two lowland areas, an eastern and western plain.
Taiwan is departed into subtropical (north area) and tropical zone (south area), which have a warm and humid climate, due to the ...

Adsorption kinetic investigations of phthalocyanine derivatives self assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold: Temperature influence on the SAM formation process and quality
(2015-08-12)
The ordered nano-structured surfaces, like self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are of a great scientific interest, due to the low cost, simplicity, and versatility of this method. SAMs found numerous of applications in molecular electronics, biochemistry and optical devices. Phthalocyanine (Pc) complexes are of particular interest for the SAM preparation. These molecules exhibit fascinating physical properties and are chemically and thermally stable. Moreover their complex structure is advantageous for the fabrication ...

Elimination in Operator Algebras
(2014-08-08)
A large class of special functions are solutions of systems of linear difference and differential equations with polynomial coefficients. For a given function, these equations considered as operator polynomials generate a left ideal in a noncommutative algebra called Ore algebra. This ideal with finitely many conditions characterizes the function uniquely so that Gröbner basis techniques can be applied.
Many problems related to special functions which can be described by such ideals can be solved by performing ...

Control of Open Quantum Systems: Examples & Methods for Non-Markovian Dynamics
(2023)
Usually open quantum systems are considered to be under the influence of noise and therefore faulty. On the other hand, a controlled system is regarded as something stable and predictable. It is often neglected, that the two aspects are very closely related. A perfectly isolated quantum system will not be subject to environmental influences, but this makes it also impossible to interact with it in any manner. Controlling and measuring such a system is impossible and therefore of no technical relevance. Every system ...

Artinschen ...

A semi-phenomenological approach to the structure and transport properties of macromolecules in solution
(2006-08-03)

So ...
