The effect of physical activity on motor cognition in elderly people
(2021-12)
For the presented doctoral thesis, four cross-sectional studies and a longitudinal study were conducted to examine the correspondence between physical activity and motor cognition in older adults. A total of six hypotheses were tested. Forty older adults between 65 and 80 years of age (subdivided into an active and an inactive subgroup based on Freiburg Physical Activity Questionnaire) and 20 sports students as a control group participated in the cross-sectional studies. Eighty-two seniors aged between 65 and 80 years ...

Accuracy of outcome anticipation, but not gaze behavior, differs against left- and right-handed penalties in team-handball goalkeeping
(Frontiers Research Foundation, 2015)
Low perceptual familiarity with relatively rarer left-handed as opposed to more common right-handed individuals may result in athletes' poorer ability to anticipate the former's action intentions. Part of such left-right asymmetry in visual anticipation could be due to an inefficient gaze strategy during confrontation with left-handed individuals. To exemplify, observers may not mirror their gaze when viewing left- vs. right-handed actions but preferentially fixate on an opponent's right body side, irrespective of ...

Lower-extremity resistance training on unstable surfaces improves proxies of muscle strength, power and balance in healthy older adults: a randomised control trial
(2016-11-24)
Background:
It is well documented that both balance and resistance training have the potential to mitigate intrinsic fall risk factors in older adults. However, knowledge about the effects of simultaneously executed balance and resistance training (i.e., resistance training conducted on unstable surfaces [URT]) on lower-extremity muscle strength, power and balance in older adults is insufficient. The objective of the present study was to compare the effects of machine-based stable resistance training (M-SRT) and ...

Automatic affective processes toward different types of exercise and physical activity in adults and children
(2022-03)
Taking a closer look at affective responses to exercise- and physical activity (PA)-related stimuli (regardless of whether they are automatic or deliberative in nature) still represents an area of research on exercise or PA motivation that involves many open questions. From this starting point, the central question is, why so many individuals feel uncomfortable while exercising and further, is this perhaps fundamental to why so many people fail to be sufficiently physically active although they know, that it would ...

Contextual cues and anticipation
(2018)
This dissertation examined the effect of event history on anticipatory behavior in tennis. The starting point of this work is that athletes rely on both kinematic cues from their opponent’s movements and contextual cues when anticipating opponent’s action intentions in time-constrained sport situations. Based on the assumption that the outcome of previous events depicts a relevant contextual cue which influences anticipation towards a subsequent event in time-constrained sport situations even in the presence of ...

Left preference for sport tasks does not necessarily indicate left-handedness
(2014)
In the elite domain of interactive sports, athletes who demonstrate a left preference (e.g., holding a weapon with the left hand in fencing or boxing in a ‘southpaw’ stance) seem overrepresented. Such excess indicates a performance advantage and was also interpreted as evidence in favour of frequency-dependent selection mechanisms to explain the maintenance of left-handedness in humans. To test for an overrepresentation, the incidence of athletes’ lateral preferences is typically compared with an expected ratio of ...
