Laser amplification in excited dielectrics
(2018-02-12)
Today, laser processing of dielectric materials with ultrashort, femtosecond laser pulses finds a great variety of applications. While ablation, cutting or welding of different types of glasses are widespread and popular examples, nanostructuring of transparent crystals or optoporating cells is part of more recent scientific studies. Although the material systems seem to be very different, their interaction with visible and infrared wavelengths is very similar: the light is simply transmitted. This changes drastically ...

Theory of Vesicle Motion and Interpretation of Electrophysiological Experiments in Chromaffin Cells, Hippocampal Neurons and Neuromuscular Junctions
(2018-07-16)
Communication among secretory cells, neurons and other related cells is accompanied by a
process called exocytosis, which consists in the release of neurotransmitters into the intercellular space. The neurotransmitter molecules are transported inside vesicles, which move
towards the cell membrane. Once at an active site of the membrane, vesicles can undergo
fusion with the membrane. As a result of fusion, a pore in the membrane is produced, through
which neurotransmitter molecules leave the cell. Exocytosis is ...

Interatomic Coulombic decay in noble gas clusters of varying sizes investigated by photon-induced (dispersed) fluorescence spectrometry
(2018-06-06)
The main topic of this thesis is to study experimentally an ultrafast and efficient non radiative mechanism – the well-known interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) – in noble gas clusters by employing fluorescence spectrometry technique in combination with synchrotron radiation. Using Neon clusters as prototype systems, a special variety of ICD, termed resonant ICD (RICD), has been investigated by a selective excitation of one component of the cluster and for different mean cluster sizes. The first part of the thesis was ...

Electron Dynamics Driven by Intense Coherent Femtosecond Laser Pulses: Dynamic Interference in Atoms and Photoelectron Circular Dichroism in Chiral Molecules
(2018-12)
Since humans have begun to explore nature, they came up with new ways and tools, which have been permanently improved. At some point, those tools allowed to look into the microworld and to study the quantum nature of matter. One of such tools to explore the quantum world is the light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (laser). Since the first lasers were built almost 60 years ago, their capabilities improved permanently, allowing the study of hitherto-unknown physical phenomena. Two of such phenomena, ...

Visualizing the electronic structure of small molecules with rovibronic photon emission spectroscopy
(2018)
A key in understanding the fundamental structure of atoms and molecules has been their absorption and emission of electromagnetic radiation across all spectral ranges. The observation of discrete line spectra contributed to the development of core concepts in quantum mechanics and thus the modern picture of physical processes occurring at small scales. The ongoing refinement of both experimental and theoretical methods in spectroscopy allows to deal with succeedingly more complex systems in different interactions to ...
