Combined use of spectral signatures and ultrasonic sward height for the assessment of biomass and quality parameters in heterogeneous pastures
(2017-06-21)
Precision management of grasslands requires accurate information on sward characteristics at a spatial and temporal scale. Multi-sensor data fusion provides data for site-specific grassland management. The present study aimed to demonstrate the potential of using a combination of ultrasonic and hyper-spectral sensor data fusion to predict forage quality (crude protein and acid detergent fiber) and biomass in heterogeneous pastures. The ability of a mobile sensing system equipped with both sensors to quantify within-field ...

Energetische Verwertung städtischen Laubs
(2017-11-28)

Laboratory and field experiment evaluation of alternatives for maize in biogas production
(2017-09-28)
The objective of this thesis was to investigate possible alternatives to monocropped maize for the production of biogas.
The strategy of double-cropping for the production of biogas substrates is addressed by degradation experiments with maize as the standard crop and the two alternative crops sunflower and sorghum-sudangrass. Biological degradation experiments were made in biogas batch reactors for all three crops in each maturity stage. The remaining material was analysed for different chemical parameters to ...

Documenting the social and environmental consequences of oil palm plantations in Nicaragua
(Department of Organic Food Quality and Food Culture at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2017-12-29)
Palm oil production is expanding in many tropical areas worldwide. The implications for the landscape, social relations and living conditions in the respective areas are the subject of a controversial debate. This article explores the social, economic, and environmental impacts caused by palm oil production in two places in south-eastern Nicaragua: Kukra Hill and Boca de Sábalos. From a theoretical perspective of political ecology, this article reflects on the opportunities and limitations of non-governmental ...

Urban agriculture: How bottom-up initiatives are impacting space and policies in São Paulo
(Department of Organic Food Quality and Food Culture at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2017-12-29)
The growing demand for the creation of urban gardens in large cities has created a discussion about the need for green spaces in cities that fulfil multiple functions. Beyond the production of fresh and healthy food, these spaces should also connect citizens, transform the public space through collective action, and engage the participation of society in the policies and planning for a greener city with a better quality of life. This paper addresses the case of São Paulo specifically and illustrates how urban gardens ...

The case for citizen science in urban agriculture research
(Department of Organic Food Quality and Food Culture at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2017-12-29)
In an uncertain future of climate change and constrained resources, urban agriculture is widely viewed as a sustainable and scalable approach to improving food security. While its social, health and wellbeing benefits are well documented, there is a major knowledge gap in terms of the financial accessibility of urban food production for all households. The implications are far-reaching: if urban agriculture is purely a middle-class discretionary activity, then it will play a limited role in improving food security ...

Dueling the consumer-activist dualism: The consumption experiences of modern food activists
(Department of Organic Food Quality and Food Culture at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2017-12-29)
Consumer-based food activism (CBFA) is increasingly a symbol of modern politics. Through eating, food purchasing, and other consumer behaviours, individuals advocate for social justice causes. However, CBFA is critiqued for being enabled or produced by neoliberal ideologies, which emphasize individuals’ market-based positions as consumers over other (activist) roles, effectively diminishing any influence such personal behaviours have on changing broader structural systems. This project is an exploratory study ...

“Reaffirming that all human rights are universal, indivisible, interrelated, interdependent and mutually reinforcing and must be treated in a fair and equal manner, on the same footing and with the same emphasis, and recalling that the promotion and protection of one category of rights should never exempt States from the promotion and protection of the other rights, recognizing the special relationship and interaction between peasants and other people working in rural areas, and the land, water, nature and territory ...
