Mode properties of telecom wavelength InP-based high-(Q/V) L4/3 photonic crystal cavities
(2020-05-13)
We present finite-difference time domain simulations and optical characterizations via micro-photoluminescence measurements of InP-based L4/3 photonic crystal cavities with embedded quantum dots (QDs) and designed for the M1 ground mode to be emitting at telecom C-band wavelengths. The simulated M1 Q-factor values exceed 106, while the M1 mode volume is found to be 0.33 × (λ/n)3, which is less than half the value of the M1 mode volume of a comparable L3 cavity. Low-temperature micro-photoluminescence measurements ...

Two-dimensional Wrinkle Resonators for Random Lasing in Organic Glasses
(2020-02-12)
Random lasers consisting of slab waveguides with two-dimensional disordered wrinkling patterns that act as scattering resonators are reported. As active material 2,2′,7,7′-tetraphenyl-9,9′-spirobifluorene is used which is sandwiched between an oxidized silicon wafer and a cladding with higher glass transition temperature. Wrinkles with tailorable periodicity have been induced by thermal annealing. Photopumping experiments show the transition from amplified spontaneous emission to a multiple peak laser spectrum with ...

Fabrication and Characterization of Single-Crystal Diamond Membranes for Quantum Photonics with Tunable Microcavities
(2020-12-04)
The development of quantum technologies is one of the big challenges in modern research. A crucial component for many applications is an efficient, coherent spin–photon interface, and coupling single-color centers in thin diamond membranes to a microcavity is a promising approach. To structure such micrometer thin single-crystal diamond (SCD) membranes with a good quality, it is important to minimize defects originating from polishing or etching procedures. Here, we report on the fabrication of SCD membranes, with ...

3D Micro/Nanopatterning of a Vinylferrocene Copolymer
(2020-05-23)
In nanoimprint lithography (NIL), a pattern is created by mechanical deformation of an imprint resist via embossing with a stamp, where the adhesion behavior during the filling of the imprint stamp and its subsequent detachment may impose some practical challenges. Here we explored thermal and reverse NIL patterning of polyvinylferrocene and vinylferrocene-methyl methacrylate copolymers to prepare complex non-spherical objects and patterns. While neat polyvinylferrocene was found to be unsuitable for NIL, freshly-prepared ...

Calculation of optical gain in AlGaN quantum wells for ultraviolet emission
(2020-09-03)
Stimulated emission from AlGaN based quantum wells (QWs) emitting at ultraviolet wavelengths is investigated theoretically. Maxwell–Bloch equations in the second Born approximation are solved self-consistently with the Poisson equation. The valence band dispersion is obtained from a 6-band kp-model. For a QW emitting at around 270 nm with a thickness of 2.2 nm, an estimated FWHM of 10 meV for homogeneous broadening and an excitonic red shift of 100 meV are extracted under typical laser conditions. From a comparison ...

Single-atom heat engine as a sensitive thermal probe
(2020-09-09)
We propose employing a quantum heat engine as a sensitive probe for thermal baths. In particular, we study a single-atom Otto engine operating in an open thermodynamic cycle. Owing to its cyclic nature, the engine is capable of translating small temperature differences between two baths into a macroscopic oscillation in a flywheel. We present analytical and numerical modeling of the quantum dynamics of the engine and estimate it to be capable of detecting temperature differences as small as 2 μK. This sensitivity can ...

Time Operator, Real Tunneling Time in Strong Field Interaction and the Attoclock
(2020-04-07)
Attosecond science, beyond its importance from application point of view, is of a fundamental interest in physics. The measurement of tunneling time in attosecond experiments offers a fruitful opportunity to understand the role of time in quantum mechanics. In the present work, we show that our real T-time relation derived in earlier works can be derived from an observable or a time operator, which obeys an ordinary commutation relation. Moreover, we show that our real T-time can also be constructed, inter alia, from ...

Temperature resistant fast InxGa1−xAs / GaAs quantum dot saturable absorber for the epitaxial integration into semiconductor surface emitting lasers
(2020-06-30)
Quantum-dot-based semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) with fast response times were developed by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Using quantum dots (QDs) in the absorber region of the SESAMs instead of quantum wells, enables additional degrees of freedom in the design, the control of saturation parameters and the recovery dynamics. However, if one wants to integrate such a SESAM element into semiconductor surface emitting lasers such as a mode-locked integrated external-cavity surface-emitting laser ...
