Topic space trajectories
(2021-05-15)
The annual number of publications at scientific venues, for example, conferences and journals, is growing quickly. Hence, even for researchers it becomes harder and harder to keep track of research topics and their progress. In this task, researchers can be supported by automated publication analysis. Yet, many such methods result in uninterpretable, purely numerical representations. As an attempt to support human analysts, we present topic space trajectories, a structure that allows for the comprehensible tracking ...

Soil N₂O flux and nitrification and denitrification gene responses to feed-induced differences in the composition of dairy cow faeces
(2021-05-17)
Faeces from cows with different milk yield and non-lactating cows were applied to soil to investigate whether soil N₂O efflux is related to feeding-induced differences in faecal microbiome and abundances of nitrification and denitrification genes. Fungal 18S-rRNA gene abundance was the highest in the faeces of the non-lactating group. The 18S-rRNA/ergosterol ratio showed a strong positive correlation with the 18S-rRNA/fungal glucosamine ratio. The milk-yield groups did not affect the gene abundances of bacterial 16S ...

An Overview of the Use of Genotyping Techniques for Assessing Genetic Diversity in Local Farm Animal Breeds
(2021-07-06)
The number of local farm animal breeds is declining worldwide. However, these breeds have different degrees of genetic diversity. Measuring genetic diversity is important for the development of conservation strategies and, therefore, various genomic analysis techniques are available. The aim of the present work was to shed light on the use of these techniques in diversity studies of local breeds. In summary, a total of 133 worldwide studies that examined genetic diversity in local cattle, sheep, goat, chicken and pig ...

How and why does the attitude-behavior gap differ between product categories of sustainable food? Analysis of organic food purchases based on household panel data
(2021-02-16)
Organic agriculture promotes the transformation toward sustainability because of positive effects for the environment. The organic label on food products enables consumers to make more sustainable purchasing decisions. Although the global market for organic food has grown rapidly in recent years, only a part of the organic product range benefits from this positive trend. To develop the organic market further, it is important
to understand the food-related values and attitudes that drive the purchase of organic food. ...

Null and Void? Errors in Meta-analysis on Perceptual Disfluency and Recommendations to Improve Meta-analytical Reproducibility
(2021-02-03)
In the 2018 meta-analysis of Educational Psychology Review entitled “Null effects of perceptual disfluency on learning outcomes in a text-based educational context” by Xie, Zhou, and Liu, we identify some errors and inconsistencies in both the methodological approach and the reported results regarding coding and effect sizes. While from a technical point of view the meta-analysis aligns with current meta-analytical guidelines (e.g., PRISMA) and conforms to general meta-analytical requirements (e.g., considering ...

Legal challenges of an open web index
(2021-03-16)
Calls for a European “third way” in matters of digital technology need to be put into action to achieve an actual change of the status quo. To achieve autonomy in the digital sphere, European alternatives to digital services and products need to be established. However, such efforts must also extend to the level of information technology infrastructure. To that end, decentralized indexing of the internet could significantly help to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty. Nevertheless, legal challenges need to be ...

Hot Work Tool Steel Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Review on Most Relevant Influencing Factors
(2021-03-26)
As a representative of a common carbon-bearing hot work tool steel AISI H13 is in focus of the present review paper. Most relevant details for processing of AISI H13 by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) are systematically investigated. Three common stages of process parameter development and material assessment, respectively, are in focus: general processibility, process refinement, and deduction of process–microstructure–property relations, i.e., understanding of the interplay of relevant elementary mechanisms. On the ...

Exploiting ferroelectric and ferroelastic effects in piezoelectric energy harvesting: theoretical studies and parameter optimization
(2021-02-18)
While piezoelectric energy harvesting typically focuses on converting mechanical into electrical energy on the basis of the linear reversible piezoelectric effect, the potential of exploiting the non-linear ferroelectric effect is investigated theoretically in this paper. Due to its dissipative nature, domain switching, on the one hand, is basically avoided in order to prevent mechanical energy from being converted into heat. However, the electrical output, on the other hand, is augmented due to the increased change ...

The timber footprint of the German bioeconomy - state of the art and past development
(2021-04-01)
The article gives a comprehensive overview of the roundwood equivalents (RE) consumed in the German bioeconomy from Germany and abroad between 1995 and 2015, i.e., the Timber Footprint of final Consumption (TFPcon). The calculation is based on an adapted version of Exiobase 3.4. The sustainability of roundwood procurement for the TFPcon is assessed. A systematic embedding of the tree compartments considered in the TFP in the context of national forest inventories and material flow analysis is presented. The results ...

Performance of field-scale lab vs in situ visible/near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy for estimation of soil properties
(2021-10-10)
Comparison of laboratory versus in situ visible/near- (visNIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy for prediction of various soil properties is required to demonstrate trade-offs between accuracy and efficiency. Field measurements were made on an arable field in Germany (silt loam Haplic Luvisol) using visNIR (ASD FieldSpec 3 Hi-Res) and MIR (Agilent Technologies 4300 Handheld FTIR) and material was collected for lab visNIR (Foss XDS Rapid Content Analyzer) and MIR (Bruker-TENSOR 27) measurements on dried and ground ...
