Legal Struggles: A Social Theory Perspective on Strategic Litigation and Legal Mobilisation
(2023-03-08)
Social movements, NGOs and other political actors often mobilise the law for social change. Strategic litigation and collective legal mobilisation can be key instruments to face current political challenges like the climate crisis, human rights violations against refugees or the exploitation of workers along global supply chains. Although these struggles are framed by a societal context and have impacts on the political and juridical fields, the literature about legal mobilisation still does not decidedly engage with ...

Research and development intensive clusters and regional competitiveness
(2023-05-02)
Modern cluster theory provides reasons for positive external effects that accrue from the interaction of spatially proximate firms operating in common and related fields of economic activity. In this paper, we examine the impact of R&D-intensive clusters as a key factor of regional competitiveness on productivity growth. In relying on a hybrid approach of cluster identification, we examine effects of cluster specialization and diversity for a panel of German NUTS-3 regions in 2003–2019. After controlling for regional ...

Health promotion for the unemployed: the evaluation of the JOBS Program Germany from the trainers’ perspective
(2023-11-17)
Background
The JOBS Program Germany is a labor market integrative and health promotion intervention for unemployed people. This study examines JOBS Program Germany trainers’ view of (1) the theoretical concept of the JOBS Program, (2) its practical implementation in Germany on-site, (3) its acceptance by participants, and (4) the training effects. The study aimed at identifying potential for adaption allowing adjustments to improve the practical implementation and the training effectiveness.
Methods

Analysis of the Machine-Specific Behavior of Injection Molding Machines
(2023-12-22)
The performance of an injection molding machine (IMM) influences the process and the quality of the parts manufactured. Despite increasing data collection capabilities, their machine-specific behavior has not been extensively studied. To close corresponding research gaps, the machine-specific behavior of two hydraulic IMMs of different sizes and one electric IMM were compared with each other as part of the investigations. Both the start-up behavior from the cold state and the behavior of the machine at different ...

Cover crops and compost prevent weed seed bank buildup in herbicide‐free wheat-potato rotations under conservation tillage
(2019-02-07)
Weeds are a major constraint affecting crop yields in organic farming and weed seed bank analysis can be an important tool for predicting weed infestation and assessing farming system sustainability.
We compared the weed seed banks two and four years after transition from conventional to reduced tillage in organically managed winter wheat–potato cropping sequences in two replicated field trials. Experimental factors were either conventional (CT) with moldboard (25 cm) or reduced tillage (RT) with chisel ploughing ...

Influence of effluent particles and particle-bound micropollutants on the removal of micropollutants and UVA₂₅₄ in wastewater effluent ozonation
(2024-01-09)
This study systematically investigated the influence of effluent particles and activated sludge (AS) particles on the removal of micropollutants via wastewater effluent ozonation within typical effluent total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations. A series of batch experiments revealed that particle concentrations up to 30 mg/L had a minor impact on the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the aqueous phase. Moreover, the reduction of UV absorbance at 254 nm (UVA₂₅₄) was negatively correlated to the level of ...

Exploring the evolutionary dynamics of myrmecophytism: Perspectives from the Southeast Asian Macaranga ant-plant symbiosis
(2024-02-09)
Myrmecophytic plants utilise defensive services offered by obligate ant partners nesting in their domatia in a novel means of survival in tropical habitats. Although much is known about the ecology of myrmecophytism, there aren’t enough empirical examples to demonstrate whether it substantially influences evolutionary patterns in host plant lineages. In this study, we make use of the species-rich Macaranga (Euphorbiaceae) ant-plant symbiosis distributed in the Southeast Asian Sundaland to delve into the evolutionary ...

A material model for thick, rate-dependent adhesives with delocalized softening
(2023-10-04)
This contribution is dedicated to the development and implementation of a material model to describe the deformation behaviour of assembly adhesives. These assembly adhesives are usually used with thicknesses of several millimetres up to centimetres in order to compensate for large relative displacements of joining parts. These large displacements can be resisted by assembly adhesives, since they have a low shear modulus and thus a high strain until failur above their glass transition temperature. As a basis, the ...

Influence of Chitosan and Grape Seed Extract on Thermal and Mechanical Properties of PLA Blends
(2023-03-22)
Blends based on polylactic acid (PLA), chitosan, and grape seed extract (GE) were prepared by extrusion and injection molding. The effect of chitosan (5% and 15% on PLA basis) and natural extract (1% on PLA basis) incorporated into the PLA host matrix was explored regarding the thermal and mechanical properties. GE showed antioxidant activity, as determined by the DPPH assay method. Chitosan and GE affect the degree of crystallinity up to 30% as the polysaccharide acts as a nucleating agent, while the extract reduces ...
