Gender differences in time-poverty among rural households in Southwest Nigeria
(2021-10-29)
This study seeks to assess gender inequality in and correlates of time poverty among 360 rural households in Southwest, Nigeria. A person is deemed to be time poor if (s)he works more than 10.5 hours per day, the internationally accepted threshold. Using the time allocation domain of the Abbreviated Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index, the study found that on the average, rural women and men spent about 10.3 hours and 8 hours, respectively, on work activities on a daily basis. Work activities for women were found ...

Tillage system and integrated soil fertility inputs improve smallholder farmers’ soil fertility and maize productivity in the Central Highlands of Kenya
(2021-09-20)
We designed and implemented an on-farm trial in Meru South and Gatanga sub-counties to understand the effects of integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) technologies on soil nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and maize productivity. The technologies included combinations of mineral fertiliser and maize stover (CrMf); crop residue, Tithonia diversifolia and rock phosphate (CrTiP); crop residue, Tithonia diversifolia and goat manure (CrTi-Man); crop residue, inorganic fertiliser and goat manure (CrMfMan); ...

Continuity and changes in food consumption pattern among Tibetan refugee community in India
(2021-09-29)
Background: Food consumption pattern of refugee communities was carried by many scholars but little is known about the food continuity of refugees in host country and its implications on health.
Aim: The present study highlights the issue of food continuity among Tibetan refugees in Bylakuppe settlement, India.
Methods: 200 household data were collected in order to understand food consumption pattern by employing household structured questionnaire. Simultaneously, 23 individual data were collected consisting first ...

Hot Work Tool Steel Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Review on Most Relevant Influencing Factors
(2021-03-26)
As a representative of a common carbon-bearing hot work tool steel AISI H13 is in focus of the present review paper. Most relevant details for processing of AISI H13 by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) are systematically investigated. Three common stages of process parameter development and material assessment, respectively, are in focus: general processibility, process refinement, and deduction of process–microstructure–property relations, i.e., understanding of the interplay of relevant elementary mechanisms. On the ...

Financial Inclusion in the Global South: An Analysis of Index-Based Agricultural Insurance and Farmer Food Security in India
(2021-09-29)
Index-based agricultural insurance (IBAI) is presented by several development organizations as a highly effective way of mitigating climate change related risks and improving farmer food security. However, critics doubt the effectiveness of the instrument and regard it as a new frontier for capital accumulation. Linking to this debate, this research uses a qualitative design to investigate how IBAI affects the food production and consumption of farmers in the Indian state of Karnataka. It finds that the proposed ...

Simultaneous impact modified and chain extended glass fiber reinforced poly(lactic acid) composites: Mechanical, thermal, crystallization, and dynamic mechanical performance
(2021-02-05)
Herein, glass fiber (GF) reinforced binary, ternary, and quaternary poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites were prepared. Toughening, and chain extension of PLA was achieved through the incorporation of impact modifier and chain extender and their concurrent effects on the spectroscopic, crystallization, mechanical, thermal, and thermomechanical properties of the composites were investigated. High mechanical properties of GF influenced the mechanical performance of the composites. However, GF alone could not restrict the ...

A Novel Approach to Robustly Determine Residual Stress in Additively Manufactured Microstructures Using Synchrotron Radiation
(2021-07-29)
In recent decades additive manufacturing (AM) for years has been in focus of academia and industry as its underlying production principle allows for the realization of designs of unprecedented geometrical complexity. However, often such structures are not realized due to the lack of understanding of structural and mechanical properties, this fact amongst others related to the unique microstructures established by the related processes. In this context, residual stresses, highly affected by the scan strategy and process ...

Determinants of households’ membership in agricultural cooperatives in Bhutan
(2021-10-05)
The Royal Government of Bhutan has been promoting agricultural cooperatives (ACs) in the country; however, the number of people joining ACs is small. This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing households' decision to join ACs in Central Bhutan. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect data from 384 households (192 AC members and 192 non-AC members). Trained enumerators collected data in June and July 2018 using structured questionnaires. The binary logistic regression showed that households ...

20 Jahre Kumulieren und Panaschieren
(2021-04)

Environmental Impacts of Food Loss and Waste: Land Degradation
(2021-02-23)
Food waste and loss have a negative impact on the environment through water, land, energy and other natural resources that are used to produce non-consumable products. According to the results of an empirical study, to establish the degree of degradation of land resources as a result of food loss and waste, as well as to identify potential environmental benefits from reducing food loss and waste for agricultural land use. Methods: The authors’ methodological approach for assessing the impact of food loss and waste ...
