Hydro-economic Modeling for Optimization of Sustainable Water Management of a River Basin in the Wake of Climate Change: Case Study of the Zarrine River Basin (ZRB), Iran
(2018-11)
Food and water security will be a great future challenge due to the growth of population and unsustainable water usage. The renewable water resources in the MENA region including Iran, are expected to decline. This situation is exacerbated by the increasing demands and the rising climate variability in the wake of global climate change affecting adversely the available water resources. This thesis research attempts to evaluate the impacts of climate change and water demands on the hydrological and environmental ...

(2018-09-10)
Anwendungen, ...

The ‘forma specialis’ issue in Fusarium: A case study in Fusarium solani f. sp. pisi
(2018-01-19)
The Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) has been studied intensively but its association with legumes, particularly under European agro-climatic conditions, is still poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated phylogenetic relationships and aggressiveness of 79 isolates of the FSSC collected from pea, subterranean clover, white clover and winter vetch grown under diverse agro-climatic and soil conditions within Temperate and Mediterranean Europe. The isolates were characterized by sequencing tef1 and ...

Multilayer Thin-film Structures with Distributed Cavity for Optical Filter and Laser Applications
(2018-12)
This work is aimed at the development of a fabrication process for realization of a chirped filter based laser device (called as coreSEL). Conventional vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are based on Fabry-Pérot arrangement where the electric field of the resonant mode is mainly located in the cavity region (center) and often causes undesired effects such as mode-jumps. However, coreSEL is based on chirped optical filter which offers a resonant mode with wider spatial distribution of the electric field ...

Extremal Fixpoints for Higher-Order Modal Logic
(2018-10)
In this dissertation, we investigate the interplay between extremal fixpoints and higher-order constructs. The main Focus here is Higher-Order Modal Fixpoint Logic (HFL), an extension of the modal mu-calculus by a simply typed lambda calculus. The resulting logic is very expressive, yet the interplay of its components has not been systematically investigated so far. Goal of this thesis is to characterize the interplay of the components of HFL.
A first characterization is given by converting the denotational semantics ...

Africa’s future: Demarginalizing urban agriculture in the era of climate change
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-06-05)
Africans are migrating to cities. With the continent’s cities projected to double in population by 2050, the issue of food insecurity in urban areas is increasingly becoming a major concern. To sustain this urban explosion, the question of how to maintain constant food supply to urban residents remains an urgent priority since these locations do not always get access to adequate food. There has, however, been little work on examining urban agriculture (UA) as an alternative means of reducing hunger in Africa, especially ...

Process is King: Evaluating the Performance of Technology-mediated Learning in Vocational Software Training
(2018-09-01)
Technology-mediated learning (TML) is a major trend in education, since it allows to integrate the strengths of traditional- and IT-based learning activities. However, TML providers still struggle in identifying areas for improvement in their TML offerings. One reason for their struggles is inconsistencies in the literature regarding drivers of TML performance. Prior research suggests that these inconsistencies in TML literature might stem from neglecting the importance of considering the process perspective in ...
